I think it is more about socioeconomics and class warfare now. Yes,it is true that african americans are overwhelmingly represented in the lower range. But, it does not serve the interests of leveling the playing field when a higher socio-economic minority is given the boost. I have no problems with affirmative action to level the playing field otherwise. But, this process has been set up as a numbers game.

Are people going to assume that a non-white who gets this job did so because of "affirmative action" or being "diverse"?

Alright folks. There are some serious biases bubbling to the surface, and this thread is in grave danger of getting very ugly very fast. Pretend you got a peer of a different ethnic background in your office. If you won't be saying it to his/her face, you shouldn't be saying it here. This is an open forum and none of us really know who's reading these posts. So I caution all of you to behave accordingly.

reducing the percentage of white people in a company, organization, government, neighborhood, etc, is always a good thing. It's been proven. So true. I don't even know why we let white people procreate anymore. Isn't there an island we can ship them to somewhere on the other side of the world? Or maybe we should just shove them all in a furnace and light a match. Completely off the rails. Someone please lock.

Affirmative Action is a touchy subject and it is constitutionally prohibited unless there is a compelling need. I have worked in various Government jobs and for the most part I can say that the legacy that affirmative action has left is that many folks immediately and wrongly immediately label a non white co worker or supervisor as a "quota". I do not know what benefit these feel good diversity and inclusion e-mails have--if anything it picks scabs from past practices.

Unfortunately, some will. I had friends in law school who refused to put any indication on their resume that they were AA because they wanted to be judged on their own merit and not their race. I think Stephen Carter discussed what it felt like in "Reflections of an Affirmative Action Baby" to be presumed to have the spot because of race. All that being said, a more diverse workplace is a good thing--but diversity is now stemming from differences in socio economics more than race. I would submit that a white and a black who were both children of professionals and went to good schools and grew up in safe neighborhoods, have a lot more in common than the white does with someone who grew up in appalachia or the black does with someone who grew up in East L.A.

And there is a compelling need to have a diverse workplace/school etc for both the minority and the non-minority. I think the legacy of affirmative action in this context is that it allows you to look at the person without reference to skin color. It truly got to the point where I did not even notice skin color. What I did notice is whether the person was a jerk, dependable, reliable, bright, etc.

Well, if anything, the Board just showed its age.
I swear, you leave for just a few days...

Sorry, some people may have misinterpreted my comment to be something other than a humorous sarcastic response to what I assume was the humorous sarcastic response to an awkwardly worded non-sarcastic comment about the importance of seeing diversity in the bench. I'm happy to have the forum closed to all comments that do not add factual, truthful, relevant, and informative information to the discussion. Even though that would remove half my posts, I'd gladly take that in exchange for not having to wade through all the conversational banter to get to the helpful information on the board.
