Not sure if it’s the same for the 2023 hires, but last year we received contact for a few individuals, who could determine if we could receive relo benefits on the tentative offer of employment. It was buried towards the end of the letter.

If you are a current employee of the executive Branch you will get full relocation package. After moving many times in my former job the SSA package was best ever. They actually hired a contractor to coordinate it all. Home sale, home purchase. Household goods, temporary housing, and transportation between stations. Be patient this is a huge undertaking by the hiring office and it moves in phases. Once the hiring is all done they will send names of current feds to relocation office and the wheels will start turning. I was still coordinating my move while in ALJ training. You will deal with a contractor who coordinates the entire process from beginning to end. Last time they were based out of Arizona.
no relocation if you are state employee, coming in from private practice and I am not sure if you are a non executive branch employee like judiciary or legislative.

This is reassuring, I appreciate the information. Thank you!

The relocation contractor is the "general" for the move and will sub contract various phases of the process. As a practical matter you may reject any portion and seek your own vendor. However, if you do that, be sure to save all receipts to submit for the allowable reimbursement. Some non contract vendors are able to direct bill. It is important to check with the principal contractor about these questions. Although it was many years ago, we were able to switch real estate agents, and it was a seemless process. Read the accompanying information carefully, as allowances, timeframe, and vendor options can be critical to an effecient transition to a new location. Experienced Feds usually know the drill, so gather information when you can and verify anything that does not appear clear in the official documents. Good luck to all, it can be a great adventure.

For those who got the offer, I’m interested to see how the relocation package plays out for those who are keeping a primary residence in their current location and a second ADS where they’ve been hired. Even if they’re planning on teleworking half or more from their current home long-term, I would imagine most would want to be in the office quite a bit while they’re first starting out, and a short-term housing allowance while figuring all of that out would be very helpful, I would think.

I may be completely incorrect, but I believe the relo package is only for permanent moves, not to establish a secondary ADS. Also, there’s no need to spend more time in office than necessary. Most ALJs only go in when they have in-person hearings and are home otherwise. My office is generally a ghost town.
