Not only the housing market, but the job market (for spouses) may be a factor. Just read an article about the high unemployment rate and how hard it is for folks who are older (read that as 40s and up) to get jobs these days.
As I posted in another thread previously, I know a person who took an ALJ position in an outlying ODAR office, with the wife remaining in the family home with the kids and continuing her job, who commuted on weekends (six hours one way) for 12 years until a transfer was possible.
