On TOB they've been arguing over whether the silence as to a prior ALJ gig means he came right off the register. Same thing for the other hire. The other side of it has been essentially that they are silent as to the register too, and the SEC has not, at least recently, been hiring from the register. Someone claimed also to have seen a posting for experienced ALJs to apply at the SEC, but of course that would not be conclusive either. There is nothing on the first few pages of a Google search for "James Grimes administrative law judge" that appears to be about him that isn't about the SEC. Additionally, there is no listing for him on the disabilityjudges site. I don't know that this is conclusive that there isn't an ALJ job between the DOJ and SEC but I tend to think that if this guy were an ALJ somewhere else it would show up. Also there hasn't been anything that I recall saying that the SEC had put up a USAJOBS listing for an ALJ. I don't know why an agency would say in their press release we hired this guy off the register. Is it possible that this is not a UAPA ALJ position and is more akin to the AJs that some agencies use? I don't know anything about the SEC. Although I seem to recall that ALJFAQ referenced them as one of his target agencies..... Maybe he starts in August.

They should argue less and use google more (my search was for this: james grimes department of justice). It looks like this article fleshes out his background. The DC Bar shows he was licensed there in 1998. His experience doesn't suggest he has been an ALJ but was JAG. "Administrative Law Judge Grimes comes to the SEC from the DOJ, where he spent 13 years as a senior litigation counsel in its civil division and a member of the faculty at the Department of Justice National Advocacy Center. He began his career as a trial defense counsel in the U.S. Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps, where he defended service members in courts-martial. Later, he served as an appellate counsel representing the government before military appellate courts, according to the SEC." www.law360.com/articles/553011/sec-nearly-doubles-administrative-law-office-staff

Also, FWIW, ALJ Grimes was appearing on behalf of DOJ as recently as this spring.

I haven't been to TOB since I found this one. Hardly anyone posts and when they do they fight about everything. I hope it was a reg hire. But it would be kinda odd for nobody on here to have made the cert...no? In any event, it's good news. I'm not sure how odd it would be for no one on this board to be in the top 4-6 scores for DC. That's a pretty tiny group, and that's all the SEC would likely get for two spots.

I mean I thought things sometimes got testy here but that is a whole special kind of jackwagonery. I especially like how they refer to us as "carnie"s. If that was the only source for information I would probably have screwed up a long time ago.

Also, an anonymous pm'er just advised a "Beau Grimes" was on the corrected email Bob sent to the first group on cert day. They also said it appears "James Grimes" goes by "Beau."
So it appears he was a reg hire and is now off ssa's radar. Yeehaw. And congrats Beau.

I think our usual estimate is about 1/3 of the register is on (or at least participates in the polls on) this Board. If the SEC got a cert for two positions in a single location, OPM would only need to give them 4 eligibles. It would not be surprising if 4 top scorers were not among our number. Also Grimes started June 30 so it looks like the SEC got off the mark first and most efficiently.

Right. And unlike some other agencies that have many aljs that are board members and give us a heads up that a cert is coming, from the info you guys linked to, it appears sec only had two aljs before this hire. Neither of which may be board members.

Thank you, thank you ALJD and the other "old timers." I started with this board and it has been invaluable. A brief trip over to TOB was all I needed to avoid that timesink!
What absolutely amazes me is that all the participants (of both boards) are, presumably, all interested in becoming judges! You know, the folks that are supposed to listen to others with equanimity, reserve judgment until all the evidence are arguments are in, and strive to be fair in application of the law to the facts! wow....

TOB? Texas Optometry Board? Tournament of Bands? Please explain? TOB=The Other Board. ALJ Improvement. The old timers left it 7 years ago for reasons one of them is better qualified to explain and created this Board.

back to the original question. i'd say this week or next. Historically, the calls i remember friends getting were on Fridays. in fact, everyone I can think of whether I heard about it directly from the new judge or through the gossip chain was at the end of the week(either Thursday or Friday). The two i remember best were at around 11 AM Friday morning for one group of ALJ hires and a mid Friday afternoon for another group of ALJ hires. These 2 hires were over a year apart. ok, i need to make a change. i do remember another call that was made I think on a Monday or tuesday. however, that call made was 3 to 4 days after the calls started and the calls started for that group of judge hires on a Friday. Lots of calls are made on the same day so once the calls start, if you do get picked up, you have a great chance of hearing something the same day the calls start. But if you don't get a call that day, don't despair as you could get called the next business day. Sorry, i am tired so this is worded terribly... yawny face. Good luck to all.

This came in on July 2, 2014, while I was on vacation, so it may be old to you all:
Just wanted to give everyone a quick update on ALJ Hiring. We are hoping to hire 45-90 judges to come on board in August/September of this year. We have obtained certificates from OPM, completed background checks, and conducted interviews. Selections and offers will begin this month and continue for the next several weeks. Once we complete this round of hiring, we will start the process all over again for judges who will on-board in FY 2015.
Debbie
I would think you are on the right track with this week?? Offers are going to have to start sometime for crying out loud..

I have an unconfirmed report that Judge Bice may be out of the office the next 2 weeks. That would strongly imply that her input is concluded and it is all over but the dialing, now.

Nice catch Ace.
Pretty quiet today. No new leads, theories or rumors being brandished.
Maybe this is the calm before the storm and offers really will start going out tomorrow.
