HOCALJ Albuquerque is open today. Apparently Judge Heisenberg is stepping down, and Judge Pinkman is not interested. Better call Saul! 'Saul good.

What was a 'liberal' grant rate 5 years ago and ignored by the agency is not the same now. The 'outliers' are subject to scrutiny - a focused review for policy compliance. The agency has said it plans to subject all aljs to this scrutiny but it is doing it at about 2 aljs per month. To date the union has not been notified of a passing grade on any such review. The aspiring alj applicants should be aware that it is not a bed of roses.

"... the Agency needs HOCALJs who are actually interested in improving their offices - and the Agency as a whole, rather than folk who are hopping from spot to spot trying to increase their personal advantages...."
Former HOCALJ here. Stepped down to return home and attend to my elderly parents. Would step up again in a minute. It is a big job with many opportunities to make a significant difference in the work of one office, and by extension to improve the functioning of the Agency. Each HOCALJ is one of 165 (or whatever the number of offices is now, I lose track). If that scares you, stay put. If it interests you, explore it.

Making a difference is the key. It's an opportunity we all have as ALJs to make a difference.

Best HOCALJ in the world: we never heard from him until day before end-of-month cutoff - then he sent an email saying "guys, pls try to get your EDITs signed". He was always there if you needed him, and never, NEVER betrayed us to management; If you had to take time off for your family, he never asked other ALJs to take your hearings; he took them all himself. At Christmas, he got together an amazing party w/ excellent food in the office and made everybody happy. He was all about MAKING HIS EMPLOYEES HAPPY! And we always made our monthly goal!! If you want to know his name, to learn how to be the best HOCALJ, message me..

I heard that I would have to provide 3 references. Question: Who can I use? It's been a while since I last worked with my former bosses/coworkers. Other ALJs in my office like me but don't know me as far as my performance. The people who really know my work are the attorneys going before me, GS's and staff, and contractors. Suggestions?

I'm in the same boat for the ALJ hire. I decided to use the people that will give me absolutely the best, unqualifiedly great references, even if it's been a while.
