Dear Tigerlaw: Having been a Girl Scout for many, many years, I do love a good campfire/Kumbaya/so'mores fest. But now after reading your post, I have some serious concerns about my position. So at the risk of causing this board to explode into flames, please explain what "rights" you think I am giving up. Dear redryder: I do not get into flame wars (anymore). I just state my opinion and you can take it or leave and life goes on (I will not be mad or sad if you ignore my opinion). I'm way too busy these days and as we all know, I am a "kinder and gentler tigerlaw" (or kittylaw as some like to say) and as far any "rights" of yours that you are giving up, I don't have a clue if you are giving up any of your rights as I was clearly talking about NEW ALJs and here is what I said about us new ALJs: "...stand up for the rights that they have...to control their dockets and judicial independence..." Unless you are a new ALJ of which I didn't believe you were, then my comments have nothing to do about your rights. Please reread the #1 post of this thread started by a fellow NEW ALJ, and if you are a new ALJ, then I was suggesting that you stand up for your right to "control your docket and protect the concept of judicial independence." I would of done the exact same thing that BobHarris did and sucked it up and I would of started a thread entitled "Shout Out to Future Classes--Don't Let This Happen to You". The older ALJs waged many battles with the Agency over the years, through the Union process, and their efforts have given us all a great contract (CBA) and every new ALJ should take a few minutes and read your contractual rights under the CBA. I didn't do anything in my ALJ life for those rights, but I will protect those rights for my benefit and the benefit of future ALJs as I know you will too. As always, IMHO, tiger

but, I can and will handle it, because I have the eye of the Tiger....(Rocky music in the background)!
Nice Katy Perry reference! Never figured you for a Katy Perry fan, big guy.
I wasn't until Funky kept playing "I kissed a girl" over and over again at full volume while working credit hours on Sundays. I still have nightmares at night! Sometimes he would loudly sing along, but he always got the lyrics wrong and sings "I kissed a girl and I didn't like it". That explains the nightmares!

Noooooooo! You just showed your age there, ma'am. He means (I'm sure) the original Eye of the Tiger circa 1982! Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger - YouTube "www.youtube.com/watch?v=btPJPFnesV4" Clearly you don't know tigerlaw. He so meant Katy Perry. .... That's a hilarious video funky, thanks for the laugh. I think I will have to send that to my daughter and embarrass her (teenagers, no sense of humor)

Dear Tigerlaw: my question was not intended to bait you. I am one of 11 judges in the office. There is rarely if ever a day when we are all in the office. Trying to coordinate docket dates and places with them is impossible. Consequently, the best I can do is go through the calendar and select the weeks I am available for hearings. I also give the sites, being careful to rotate among the four. These dates are given to a tech who will start the process of reserving hearing rooms for me. Sometimes however, there isn't an available hearing room for the site I designated. Once advised of this, I opt to hold hearings where there is a room. Now my office is in the peculiar position of not having enough cases to fill the docket requirements and we are taking in cases from other offices. Again when advised the office now had to schedule X number of dockets from these cases, my response was to stick to my hearing dates to the extent possible but they did not need to ask me about the site. I planned to hold hearings. The site really does not matter. The outside work is all video hearings. This is what I hoped to convey in my post regarding the need to work with the staff.
By the way, if you have email and can instant message on your ODAR computer in the remote site, you can sign cases. I don't have the nifty new laptop yet. But I have seen when I log on in a remote site, I don't have all of the icons. The ones that never appear for whatever reason are e-view and CPMS. The programs are there but have to be opened through the programs via the start button.
Finally, if I wished to engage in a frivolous flame war, I would have taken great umbrage with your reference to a one-legged man. My spouse is a one-legged man and works rings around me.

In my office, there are barely enough hearing rooms for judges. So if you're new, you are low man/woman on the totem pole and you are stuck with whatever hearing slots aren't already taken. IE you will have M/W/F until someone retires.

New Judges, welcome to ODAR..! You will have strict quotas from now on - it will mean staying late, working weekends (your first year), and making many adjustments at home. Whatever you can do to minimize your stress, do it. If you have a long commute, take the train or bus - give yourself that time to decompress! move your family closer even if temporarily, and then apply for transfer after 90 days. You will never regret it..always remember family comes first!! This is the hardest job you will ever do for the next 2 yrs., especially if you are in a large urban area like me. If you are lucky enough to have a compassionate HOCALJ (there are some), that will make all the difference...most are nice but expect you to keep up and you will be threatened with losing telework if you do not.. (and telework is the only saving grace in this job). Good luck to all!
