That painful jab you are feeling is the point. You missed it. Doh! (insert Homer Simpson palm to head slap here) My point is given time, attorneys at our level could master immigration law -- it's not rocket science (goodness knows I'm not a rocket scientist). New ALJs are not expected to hit the ground running. We are assigned a mentor ALJ (mine was fantastic; I can't say enough good things about him); we are given training, and they build us up to a full docket. Eventually -- eventually, we become the ALJs we are, and hopefully we keep trying to improve. Just like every ALJ is not the poster child for ALJ perfection, everyone with experience in immigration law is not the immigration poster child for IJ perfection. They might be passing on someone that in the long run would have been well worth the effort to train... just saying. Peace and Blessings, LWS

Just back from DC from a second round interview. I was told to expect a call within the next 3 to 4 weeks for a provisional offer. I think they have/want to make some offers before the end of the fiscal year (Sep 30).

I was contacted this week to schedule a second interview for next week.

Peace and Blessings, LWS Well said.As a part of the overload seems to be assylum cases, they could also bring along new hires with less Immigration experience by giving them a "one topic" set of hearings while they receive additional seminars on other questions they will eventually hear. Most judges who assume trial court benches have practiced primarily in one field of law but end up hearing cases in areas they have never tried. Some have muffed it but most have done a creditable job. My concern with a new judge is less that they may not have tried my type of case before in their practice, but that they haven't tired cases regardless of area of law involved. This may be less an issue in administrative proceedings in general, but in immigration would seem to be valid. For that matter, an individual might have had an immigration background but only handled a narrow band of cases and while they may have passing familiarity with other statutory and regulatory areas and rulings, would not have that much more knowledge than the experienced practitioner with little or no immigration experience. Generally the profession seems to think having a bench with a blend of pre-judicial experience is a good thing. No reason that should not apply to many if not most administrative judge positions.

I had my second round interview in DC this week, and like Mercury2015, I, too, was told to expect an answer within a few weeks either way. They told me that they have two panels interviewing candidates right now. The panel said that once people are selected, then OCIJ takes all the selectees and slots them before making offers. What is interesting about that explanation is that the ACIJ who called my references weeks before the interview implied that I was being considered for a particular position, which the ACIJ identified. So my hypothesis that reconciles both pieces of information is that as part of the second round process, OCIJ sets up their draft board (for lack of a better phrase) in advance, then sends the names that fit their draft board to the second-round panel for what amounts to an up or down interview. Then for anyone who doesn't get recommended by the second panel for selection, OCIJ leaves the spot open and goes back to the well (or MAYBE does some reshuffling among the selectees if a vacancy that OCIJ had targeted is particularly critical and the selectees' "GALs" allow for it). In any event, the process that goes on behind the curtain remains fairly opaque.

Is it safe to say that the folks being considered for OMHA and IJ positions have high NOR scores? Scores have nothing to do with the IJ positions. For OMHA, the process is essentially the same as for SSA, but with many fewer positions and locations. Because there has been so much hiring from the register, the scores to get on OMHA certs are much lower than they were in 2014. OMHA certees have higher scores than the lower reaches of SSA certee scores, but the scores are not all stratospheric.

Well--I got the call with a provisional offer dependent on the security clearance from the Nov 2015 posting. Many thanks to the board members and particularly ALJWatch and Jafo for the specific Intel on IJ positions! It has been invaluable!
