Going back to New Haven, I have no experience with the HO, but New Haven has some of the best pizza anywhere. There are suburban towns with good school districts within easy driving distance. And Louis' Lunch. Hamburger originator.

I like New Haven or Hartford. Yale has all sorts of great museums. The food and the beer are great in both places. Then, I'm descended from Yankees, so what can I say.

P.S. The New Haven HO is good enough.

Onto LA.....I am waiting for someone to redo James Joyce's Ulyssses in LA as someone returning from work--best way of thinking of living in LA. . DC and NY are close, but not. With LA, there are too many streets which appear on TV, completely empty, but never are when I have to get somewhere. I have never ridden the mass transit, But my niece has and assures me it is so "cool." Not sure where it's just a pleasant experience from the smooth ride, the aroma, the interesting people (as an aside--I have never encountered celebrities in LA the way I have in NY subways--that's me, YMMV). Be prepared to live close to where you work--walking is quicker than driving, even in Burbank.

SF is not so bad. You can work there and live in a decent suburbs, commuting by BART or Caltrain, where you can indeed wear shorts, like when it hits 90 degrees in summer and it's 55 in SF.

I spent Labor Day weekend in San Fran several years ago. It was in the high 90s. That's the time of year it can get hot there. Went to a baseball game slathered in sunscreen, I felt like a chicken on a BBQ spit. I didn't stay up there long. All that said, it is one of my favorite cities.

For all the Northern Cal options, the proximity of the Muir Woods adds something awe inspiring. That place will give one a perspective check.

a little GAL humor. Folks are asking, so what about the family? is everyone going or just you (this being contingent on an offer at all). To which i say, well if it's Newark, nope, they are not coming. and then i get wriggled noses, "ewww Newark. Why did you even keep that on the GAL???"
i have some SoCal comments but will have to wait until later to make them. So i'd like to keep chatting about SoCal for the moment, Short version reinforces whatever had said: great place, traffic sucks, housing prices suck, and live close to your office. but i can offer a little bit more on each SoCalarea before too long too.

USC is there. So, if you are soulless and don't recognize the superiority and overall greatness of the University of Notre Dame, yeah, there's that.

Newark's okay. Easy train commute to nice suburbs like Dover, Morristown. Christina: Your avatar changes constantly. Do you own stock in Lady Clairol?

If you can afford to live here, Muir Woods is nice, and there are many, many beautiful and historic places to visit. I'm looking out my window now at Bay Bridge and Treasure Island. ODAR office is a couple of blocks away. Meanwhile, I am paying $48,000 a year in mortgage payments (PIT) on a GS-15 salary. Not easily, especially as you add awful income taxes, utility costs, gas ($2.55 at Costco!). Probably better to live in Mt. Pleasant, MI and come here once in a while.

I was trying to imagine what kind of house you could buy around here with that payment and I am floored just thinking about it.
