Postscript: our office is in a rural area but surrounded on 3 sides by prisons, one a maxsec. As all fed employees know, federal protection is very very good...on federal property. Once you step outside that federal door you are on your own. When the security guard approaches and says to the effect "Judge, you know you 'bout the only one that ain't armed in here" well you read up on your state laws and proceed accordingly. Our ODAR is down the street from the jail too! But it's an amazing office as far as people go.

Our local ODAR office is in a new building, across from a new hospital, surrounded by trees and a Chick-fil-A. The Interstate is a half-mile away, and there are a whopping two stoplights between the office and my house. It's my #1 on my GAL for obvious reasons. Your mileage may vary. Sorry to digress. Back to radio silence.

I went with RM Hendrick. A quick search on the internet can give you their contact information. They specialize in robes for graduations and judges. Mine is lightweight, durable and cost a little over $100. It does the job very well. I thought seriously about getting a red one. Did you consider the Rehnquist sergeant stripes option? Iolanthe. Lord Chancellor stripes.

It's rumored that the agency had at one point considered providing robes to the ALJs, emblazoned with the agency logo. Or perhaps that was apocryphal.

@papajudge you couldn't be more right. When I was a public defender, a client showed up at my home on a Saturday afternoon. I, naturally, took the horror-movie-approach and ran towards the potential danger, before husband could stop me. (note to self: always listen for the creepy music) Client advised they were given my information from the state bar association. Fortunately, things worked out just fine, but I certainly had a strongly worded conversation on Monday with my bar association (and my client). Get in the habit of frequently checking comments about you on disability judges dot com. If you see threats there (and I've seen some where the claimant outright threatens to assassinate the ALJ and his family), take screenshots, alert the authorities, and notify the folks who run the website.

I have always wondered how that website gets away with the threats being posted against standing federal judges. Boggling.

Dang it inpatientlurker . I thought we were in this together. Or not in this, as the case may be. Fear not, you are still not alone. I am also doomed. DOOOOMED I tell you. (Or it could just be that my submission of an SF-50 caused some additional paperwork for our friends in FC (sorry!), which will delay my offer confirmation email just a bit. But what fun is rational thinking like that?)

It's been a week since my call, and no email, but I got a deferral to July, so I'm assuming they're busy getting the June class taken care of first.
