After the first day of first grade my parents asked what we'd done at school, to which my indignant 6-year old self replied, "I didn't learn to read today!"
This thread feels a lot like that.

It was great. I have to say that I cannot imagine what an outsider like me would have thought if they showed up yesterday without this Board to give me some idea about what a HOCALJ, HOD, VOD, or anything else is.

I just wonder what a similarly situated outsider who hasn't been reading this Board for three years thinks?

I agree with Gaidin. These two days have been great. The ALJs and staff in my HO are very professional, helpful, and friendly.
I observed several hearings today conducted by two ALJs. Each had a different style but both were very comprehensive, prepared, + respectful to claimants. I hope all new ALJs have this important opportunity in these first few weeks.

It has been great so far, but I can't wait to be up and running with a computer, a login, and my own cases to work on. It has been great learning what all the support staff does to help make our job easier.

I was surprised that several ALJs were unaware of this board (or at least feigned ignorance) when I told them how much it helped me.

Gaidin: "VOD" means "vertical on-board delivery" (as opposed to "COD," carrier on-board delivery). A VOD is accomplished with a rotary-wing aircraft (Army folks call them "choppers," the Sea Services refer to them as "helos"). Unlike a COD (C-2 Greyhound), which requires an aircraft carrier and its attendant crew, a VOD can be accomplished on all platforms, although it's kind of dicey when the helo has to hover over a frigate or destroyer (think the CHARLES F. ADAMS, DDG 2, class) that is not outfitted with a flight deck.
Respectfully, Tom B

Once y'all find out where you're staying for training, can you let us know? My sister and nephews are going to come down for a weekend and I am hoping to get them their own room..\

After a little rockier start than some have had, my Board friends and some of the ALJ's in my HO have rallied and helped me out a lot. Most all of the early problems have been solved. So now I just have to figure all this disability stuff out. I've gotten to sit in on quite a few hearings in my first week and sit with staff and see what they do, and it's been very helpful just to see the whole process put together.
EDIT: Oh and I completely agree with Gaidin - without the Board, I would've been totally lost and had no idea how to handle the early bumps in the road.

Oh - and one of the things that's the strangest to get used to? People calling me Judge. Yes, I remember that feeling. The same as with mail addressed to "The Honorable ...." Things that do take a little getting used to.
