Three days notice for an on-site exam/interview? That's really unfair. It's totally counter-intuitive. What type of candidate is ready to drop everything and run to D.C. on three days notice? Not the best qualified candidate, I venture to say. Another example of the disconnect between the selection process and merit. The most qualified candidates don’t have to put up with this BS because their talent gives them career options. What kind of candidate drops everything? One who is serious about the job.

No insult to Crazyboard was intended and I apologize for implying candidates who can swing a snap trip to DC are not the best qualified. That was not the point of my post. I had intended to make the observation that candidates that could not accommodate a short-notice trip were being eliminated for reasons other than merit. I have applied for a number of jobs in the federal government. I have come to believe that the more elaborate the application process, the smaller the pool of qualified candidates willing to put up with the grief. It’s a valid observation.

It is a valid observation. The more painful the application process, the smaller the applicant pool, and I don't think anyone can disagree with that. By the way. thanks for clearing the air. Glad to know the previous post was just poorly worded.

Believe it or not, as unhappy as I am at how unfair (in my mind) my non-selection was, I hold no ill will against those who have been selected. Crazyboard should not be faulted for his selection nor should he be faulted for his ability to pick up and fly to DC to interview. I just think the short notice is unfair to everyone, including Crazyboard.
