www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/499819400BIA (Immigration Appeals) is hiring staff attorneys. I’m a little surprised it is only advertised as promoting to 13. I thought all DOJ attorneys went to 15, but maybe they aren’t promising that right out of the gate. “Many vacancies.”

Between the many SSA AA openings and the OMHA AA openings, I wonder how many people on the register are applying for them? I know the ALJ applicants run the gamut in their backgrounds and some make too much money at the present to take the pay cut, but there could very well be some folks on the register for whom the AA pay could be a welcome jump. Any intel or WAGs on this?

Any intel or WAGs on this? I'm on the register, currently interviewing for the AA positions. My score is somewhere between 72.50-73.00. I have no idea what to think! I have this terrible anxiety that I'll get a DW job, then get on an ALJ cert, then my new boss will refuse to give me time off to interview because I've only been there a week. Seems reasonable, eh?

Don't worry. If you're interviewing with OHO, it's admin leave anyway.

I am curious as to how experienced attorneys will they hire? Will they want newer attorneys to mold? Please all post as you get either OHO or OMHA or HHS interviews.

Got an HHS OGC rejection 3 days after applying. My head is still spinning. Between a rock and a hard placed, too old, too much experience, overqualified or under qualified- who knows! 20 years of government experience and it is as if I had worked at McDonald!s.

There are many AAs (more than half the group) in my former OMHA field office who were hired in with years of experience. I couldn’t say whether the newer field offices have taken the same approach or not.

If so, did you ever hear anything other than being referred? I haven't received a call or a rejection, which seems a little odd since it's been more than 6 months.

For what it is worth, I applied to a similar posting that was in August 2017 (DE-10036034-17-P). It included multiple cities for DHS attorney openings. Had interviews in February/March but I decided not to proceed further.

I applied and got a referral a while after the fact, if I recall. I had forgotten even applying at the time it came in. I never heard anything about an interview, so I guess it went to the “no” pile. I’ve moved agencies since then, but I’m still interested in immigration. Not as willing to leave now, though. I was unhappy with my old agency and really like my new one, so I’m not too sad about not hearing from DHS.

I'd thought they'd be set up to send some type of automated rejection letter, but perhaps not. Glad to hear you ended up somewhere better.

rejection notices tend to be the exception, not the rule. Then there was the time I got the referral together with a rejection all in 24 hours--apparently some administrative cleaning of the old files required the process.
The only other form of rejection you will get if they decide you're not qualified--to rub it in the applications section of your dashboard gets a nice scarlet lozenge that says "not selected" though I have also received one that says "not referred"
