You posted this in the Polling Palace. It should be in Foghorn's Other Jobs thread on the main board. I will move it when I get a chance. Pixie

Greetings all, I am unfortunately in the appeal process - no word yet - because I failed to properly document my experience. On the bright side - there are jobs out there. I live in California so I put out a great number of applications via the cal jobs site - calcareers.ca.gov/Default.aspxI have secured a state position as an ALJ I for the CA Department of Social Services with a start date of Feb 1, 2018. The pay is less than the federal position, but it's a start. I just put that out there for people to think about your state job opportunities. Best of luck Robb

Putting all your eggs in one basket is never a good idea. Plus, getting some state ALJ experience cannot hurt.

We recently announced a vacancy and I find that I am disappointed that it did not make foghorns Plan B list. What kind of super selective snobby operation are you running here anyway?

One that hopes that people like you will post such things so that if it doesn't get to me through the standard sources or I overlook it it can be shared--a collaborative effort.
I am running nothing--I merely seek to enable/empower others through sharing--think eleemosynary bitcoin?
So please, let us know of this vacancy so that we may behold--and apply.

Ran across a new one--the red lozenged "not referred." I guess I should appreciate that they also sent me a note explaining while I was qualified I wasn't the most qualified ..... better than no news?

Regarding other jobs, did anyone else interview this week for the attorney-advisor position with Board of Veterans Appeals? I was told that the next step is a timed writing test and that they hope to hire people to start in January. Has anyone who interviewed received an invite for timed writing test yet? Also, in the job announcement it said that this was a GS 11 job, but the salary range went up to $145,000. Was that possibly a typo? Thanks!

If it went to 145k - then it sounds like it was for GS 11-14 position - that means that depending on your experience they will make you a job offer anywhere between 11 to 14 (and probably also adjust for step to make it so they match or exceed your current salary). That is what happened when I join government - They made me an offer and I provided my salary and they moved up on the steps to exceed my salary at the time. Here is a link to the GS table - www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/salary-tables/17Tables/html/DCB.aspxIf you applied - go to USAjobs and sign in - your application and the original job description will be there so you can see what the salary range - grade range for the position is instead of trying to remember

Congratulations to foghorn on expanding our vocabularies once again. My first-year Property professor introduced me to the term "eleemosynary". As a classicist, I understood its etymology, but I have to say I never ran across it while studying the "root" languages. For all you fans of the Requiem (one of my favorites is the Verdi, and the cello part is a killer), "eleemosynary" shares its origin with "eleison" (the latter being the aorist imperative form of the verb meaning "have mercy"). The aorist is a nifty tense in Greek; I like to describe it (okay, it doesn't come up often) as a past tense denoting an action that occurred in the past (duh) that does not have as lasting an effect as something expressed in the Greek perfect tense. Think of "I did it" versus "I have done it." Respectfully, Tom B

Nope. Too scared gern or rhd would apply. The applicant pool for these positions has no reason to fear competition from me. I am snuggled securely in the arms of the People of the State of Illinois, and I'm not leaving their warm embrace for anything but ODAR or OAHU or OOMPAH or whatever they'll be calling it by the time they reach my score.
As far as I'm concerned, you are free to disclose to all who care to receive the info. gern may be another story. I hear he's a vicious competitor and cares not about what body parts get strewn across the landscape of his desecration.

Now this is an awesome position, if you don’t mind living near DC: Attorney Advisor (Appeals Officer), GS-12: $79,720.00 - $103,639.00; GS-13: $94,796.00 - $123,234.00; Promotion Potential GS 14 The mission of the National Appeals Division (NAD) is to conduct impartial administrative appeals hearings and reviews of adverse program decisions made by officers, employees or committees of designated agencies of USDA. As an Attorney Advisor at the National Office in Alexandria, Virginia, you will provide expert advice regarding legal aspects of second-level appeals under agency jurisdiction. You will examine case records and evidentiary hearings, conduct legal research and fact-finding, and recommend and prepare NAD Director Review determinations that are the final administrative decisions for USDA on these appeals. For more information visit the National Appeals Division Homepage at www.nad.usda.gov/ www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/482152300 Last time this position was advertised, I was referred for it and had an interview scheduled.... and then the latest hiring freeze went into effect. I applied again, but yesterday I got the message that I was not qualified because "you did not provide your date of admission to the bar, state, and license number." For crying out loud! While I can't go back to double check this, I can't see why I wouldn't have included this information. I'm on the register, so I'm not that stressed about it, but apparently the ALJ posting isn't the only one where you can get dinged for this particular "omission". state, and license number. wow that sucks. Can you call the HR person? And explain this scenario. Getting to the interview phase is a big deal. Much harder to do than getting referred. Might mean they not only found you qualified but were actually considering hiring you. It could be a glitch in usajobs or other error on agencies part and the HR contact might be able to determine that and reverse not qualified determination? For example maybe the paper you submitted with bar and state did not transmit. I check status and contacts of application package upon submission. Earlier this year one app kept showing up as rejected incomplete despite all documents being uploaded. I called the HR person and she helped me fix issue and verify documents were received. The problem was that certain documents stored in usajobs were not transmitting. The HR person had me upload a fresh transcript from my desktop(luckily I had a copy there and not just in usajobs) Good luck. Being on the register is just a shot at ALJ. I would not throw in towel on this other job yet.
