I don't want to get political here, but I have always thought Rand Paul was an outlier (nicest way I can say it), but at least he is concerned about the out of control national debt:
"Yes, I want a strong national defense. I believe it's actually the most important thing the federal government does. But you have to ask yourself whether a $20 trillion debt makes us a stronger country or a weaker country."

Gov't shuts down - here we go again! Hearings are an essential function (not to mention the nightmare of having to reschedule hearings with 75 day notice) so the life of an ALJ changes little.

I'm going to go another way, I expect this shutdown to be over by Wednesday at latest, more likely tomorrow, but I predict another shutdown within the next two months. Half way to passing my pundit exam. What do I win?

So assuming the house passes the senate bill early Friday morning, and there is a 2 year commitment to domestic programs funding as of tomorrow, will SSA use that inevitable commitment to start some hiring, or will they wait until March 23rd when the detailed line item funding bill is due?

Hopefully they will get started right away. At least now they know they have time to get through a Cert, and could always request more names and then reduce their hiring plans later necessary. I'm basing this only on the fact that the number of hires planned on the last Cert kept changing even after the request was sent to OPM.

I agree with this, but there is no reason on earth why the Senator could not have made this point days ago when the bloated bill was announced - before his stunt cost the government money for a shut-down and reopen. He goes in the "tool" hall of fame next to Senator Cruz as far as I'm concerned. Must be running for President again already?

Bumping this up because I can't seem to find any information on where we are at in the appropriation process to avoid yet another shut-down! The mainstream media, including FOX, seem to have forgotten that this could be of importance to some folks. Not sure what constitutes news anymore! It can't all be about TX bomber, Russia/Trump, fake news, porn stars and their dalliances - can it?
Anybody out there plugged-in better to what's happening?

Front page of the Post reporting that Ryan says text of a bill will be released "soon." Supposedly House will vote tomorrow and leave the Senate "scant" time to vote.

It's being covered in the Washington Post. Spending deal nears finish The stories are there if you look for them, but you have to look. It was in my local paper on Sunday. Definitely not as much coverage as last month with the last CR expiration, but there's already an agreed budget.

The article notes that they're working on an omnibus spending bill, which would include all of the appropriations for all of the agencies. Also notes that they're very close to a deal, but may not complete it in time to avoid a shutdown Friday since they haven't actually filed the text of the bill yet.

The omnibus appropriations bill passed both chambers in under 24 hours, and with less than 24 hours to spare. Official spokesperson says Pres will sign it.
If so, the hiring lamp is lit until 30 September 2018.
While no guarantee anything will happen, at least the lack of appropriations will be removed as a reason for no hiring.
With each day that passes without a cert, I anticipate a steep rise in conjecture about other causes for hiring not happening. I didn't even need to consult a retired fortune teller to see that coming.

And now he’s threatening to veto it. Stay tuned. Will I be getting the afternoon off? If he actually vetoes the bill on the bases that have been floated about, I’m not sure how quickly Congress would be able to put together the next CR and a plan for going forward toward a new appropriations deal. You might get more than the afternoon off. On the other hand, this may just be a ploy for attention and he may sign the bill at the last minute. I’m still at stay tuned.

IF veoted (and that is a huge if) it will certainly take days to pass a new bill. Louise Slaughter's funeral is either today or tomorrow, almost certainly numerous members of Congress will be there, not mention all those who have left town for other reasons. Plus, what changes could even be agreed to? This feels like it passed based solely on a desire of many to not have to deal with it any more.
