Good to know that you have survived the big city and that even wilddogs are allowed. So where are you in the training process? I have sorta lost out on where everyone is and what they are doing. Pix.

----------- I have survived, Pix, thanks -- there are a lot of people out there who love dogs and look out for them, even when they're as attractiveness-challenged as yours truly. Next stop will be Baltimore in early June, and I look forward to seeing all of my classmates there. ** You mean early July, right? Looking forward to meeting you. BTW - Congratulations to everyone who graduated today!

I have a question and would appreciate your thoughts.
I am relocating to a city over 500 miles from where I am. I plan to pack and move my residence during the first week of September.
During the first two weeks of my training at the hearing office in July, will I be able to use a day or two of annual leave to fly to my city of origin (my current home) to finalize certain aspects of my move and to check on my pets? I live alone, and don't have anyone (like a spouse of family members) to help me. I am fully trained in Social Security Law, so most of the training will not be new to me.

. . . . will I be able to use a day or two of annual leave to fly to my city of origin (my current home) to finalize certain aspects of my move . . . . In the past, HOs have been known to give "reasonable" administrative leave to handle relocation issues.

Ah. Here's info from the Personnel Policy Manual:
3.3. Excused Absence - Short Periods of Time
SSA has the authority to determine the situations in which excusing employees from duty without charge to leave for short periods of time is appropriate (see Section 5.2.). A short period of time is generally construed by the Comptroller General as that time appropriate for the circumstances but not exceeding 40 hours.
5.2.3. Change of Station - Household Goods (See Section 5.4.2.)
Employees relocating for the benefit of the Government may be granted up to 1 day of excused absence to load household goods and 1 day to unload household goods.
Of course, you are also on admin leave when actually traveling from one duty station to the other, as long as you go 300 miles per day.

Thank you happy, nonamouse and ALJ Hunter for your responses. I wanted to get a general feeling of what is acceptable before asking the HOCALJ for leave the first two weeks of my job. Your info was helpful.

The guards will not allow cameras into the building, but cell phones are allowed.

I received a letter with all the Baltimore details. It suggested I bring two postage paid labels to ship back training materials? What's that about? Is that for folks taking a plane home? I will be driving to and from training. I'm wondering about those labels....

Cell Phones--they operate in hallways w/windows, occasionally inside classes but usually not. There are enough breaks to use a phone, though. Also, I can send and receive texts, though there are dead zones. I am at the first table and can text facing the right but not when facing forward.
Labels--there are multiple binders of materials, although only 1 we can take home. There are also other supplemental materials you can take with you. The office labels are to be used to send the bulked items back to the office. I have 3, but suspect 1 or 2 will suffice, depending on the size of boxes we get.

I report to my office on Monday and am looking forward to meeting everyone at the August training. I have not coordinated the travel yet, although I am hoping it will be easier as I am driving. This whole moving in four weeks business has really kept me on my toes. Good luck to those who will be at training and to those who are still waiting.

I am also starting Monday in my new office and looking forward to seeing everyone in Baltimore in August. I received my letter with the Baltimore training, but have not yet made my travel arrangements. I am still trying to decide whether to fly or drive. Do those who plan to drive know what will and will not be approved with regard to mileage and/or travel time?
