I will pray for your and your family's comfort. It is one of a parent's most dreaded fears to survive their child, and I am so sorry you and your wife are going through that. May God bless and comfort you in your time of grief and sadness.

Thank you for the kind condolences and several helpful private messages.
Now I am in the process of making arrangements to ship human remains overseas, with the help of a mortuary.
Cremation would have been simpler -- if it was good enough for my parents it is good enough for me -- and less expensive for interment or inurnment on the mainland.
However, for cultural reasons my spouse wants our relatives to see the (embalmed) body and say their last farewells "in person", so that is what we will be doing.
I am fortunate to be a FERS retiree right now, with plenty of time.

I am so sorry for your loss. I pray for comfort now, and for strength in the days to come, when his loss may be felt even more acutely than it is now.
Grief and sorrow are tied closely to love; they show us what we value and treasure. As you mourn your son, I hope you can find some solace in knowing that the depth and pain you feel at his absence is a reflection of the joy and happiness you enjoyed with him while he was present on this earth.

Today is my late son's birthday. With friends on both sides of the International Dateline, one gets to celebrate twice!
My spouse made a delicious birthday dinner in his memory, keeping an empty place at the table.
