Pixie as usual is wise in both her advice and foresight. The HR individual at SSA who is tasked with the primary responsibility of ALJ hiring is out of the office until Monday. I think I’ve all but lost all of the Monopoly money that I bet on calls coming this week. On the plus side, my heart rate has dropped back to near-normal levels since I saw that out-of-office message.

On that note, it is time for another treasure from the vault: A man became the enemy of a powerful tyrant. He was sentenced to death. The tyrant told him, "I will have you executed by the end of the week. The execution will happen at dawn, but when it happens it will be a complete surprise." The man was fearful, but he was also a deep thinker. In his cell, he pondered what the tyrant had said. "I cannot be executed on the seventh day," he thought, "because that would not be a surprise. I would know after the other six days have gone that that must be the day, and I would be expecting it. Likewise, since she cannot execute me on the seventh day, I cannot be executed on the sixth day, either." The man thought and thought, and realized that he could not be executed. His heart lifted, and he was happy. One morning, the man was taken from his cell and made into an SSA ALJ, and it was a complete surprise.

I heard that some people had a Spanish language test this week. What does that mean? Are these people closer to THE CALL? Does this mean that TPTB will need another week to review the best-qualified candidates?
The anxiety, another weekend with this anxiety....😭 Today I received a phone call from an unknown number and I almost fainted after I picked it up and I realized that it was one of those scam calls-”your bank account has been suspended...”😨😂

It likely means hiring in at least one Puerto Rico office

I heard that some people had a Spanish language test this week. What does that mean? It probably means hiring is farther off than most people think. I would assume that testing this week means the agency head has not seen or signed off on the slate of hires. If that hasn't happened yet then calls can't go out.

It likely means hiring in at least one Puerto Rico office Almost certainly. I also think it means they may be close (like next two weeks close). Basically, we have the stack of people we like better make sure these cats weren't inflating how well they speak Spanish before we get the list to the Commissioner.

I tried to play it cool, and let it ring twice before I decided I couldn’t stand the anxiety any longer and I just had to jump out to see who it was… at least it was not a scammer, but of course it was not the call. I’m glad for the intel though. I can rest easy this weekend knowing the calls probably won’t come until at least Monday, and probably even later with this new Spanish test twist: . We have waited this long-we can do another week or two….. I think I can. I think I can.

I know we’re all anxious to find out when calls are going to start, but what I’m REALLY wondering is this…how does a baster, orphan, son of a hoard and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence impoverished in squalor, grow up to be a hero and a scholar?

I just wish we knew it was going to be two weeks, as opposed to 10 minutes from now, or next Wednesday, or the Monday after that. Like you, I am developing a bit of a startle reflex whenever the phone rings.

As the man said, the waiting is the hardest part (You take it on faith. You take it to the heart..the waaaaaaaaaaaiting is the hardest part).

I’m in a Teams meeting with a reference of mine that I know was in on the selections that went on a couple of weeks ago. They are complaining about the dispositions in an office in the region.
I say “Well that’s why we need to hire more judges” (I take a long sip of coffee while maintaining eye contact).
Nothing. No wink, no “knowing” smile. Not good for me I guess, lol.

That's a funny story, but I wouldn't read too far into this. It could be this person has a good poker face. Many people do, and it is a good trait for managers. I expect that people involved in selections are under strict orders not to give the slightest hint of results. I should hope so anyway. Now if the person gave you a look of pity or scorn, that would be a different story. Once upon a time, many years ago, I bombed a structured interview. Just bombed it. It started off band and got worse. I was halfway through some anecdote when I realized I was telling a story that would illustrate the precise opposite of the trait the interviewer was looking for. Like instead of showing that I was a good person to work with, I had chosen a story that suggested pettiness, self-aggrandizement, and a vindictive streak. And as I painted myself into a corner, unable to end the story without making things worse, I remember the look of pity on the interviewer's face . . .

This reminds me of eons ago as I left the last day of the bar exam. I desperately tried to get my earphones in after I left the testing room so as not to hear people "post game" the questions. I didn't get them in quite soon enough, though, so didn't avoid overhearing at least two comments that I obsessed over for the next two months. I can tell you to try and not obsess over the person's facial reactions, but...well, I know you will. We're human. Try and relax as best you can, though.

This afternoon my daughter asked me if I wanted to play pretend. Little did I know what she had in store.
Her: “Please come in to my office. No, you sit there. Ok, that’s good. Now…tell me why you think you would make a good judge.”
Y’all. We were playing “hiring committee.” She had a greeting card that was my “resume” and she listed out my qualifications. She asked me to wait while she consulted her “super qualified partner” (the Squishmallow sitting next to her on the couch).
At the end, she said “I’m pleased to tell you that you have just what we’re looking for, and we’d like to tell you, you’re hired as a judge. We look forward to you as a fellow ‘code worker’ (co-worker, I surmise).”
My takeaway was this (1) I have the best kids ever; (2) my 7-year-old can go through the interview and selection process much more efficiently than the OHO selection committee; and (3) I maaaaaaay be saying “today could be the day” too often around my kids. 🤣

In-person! But seriously, it's gotta be this week, right? I just had the dog out for a walk and some of the leaves are changing already. It's football season. Summer is on life support (someone forgot to tell the sun and the humidity around here, though).

Summer is on life support (someone forgot to tell the sun and the humidity around here, though). This whole thing is a classic "watched pot" problem. And yet we keep staring at the water, hoping to see the bubbles. This week seems possible. But if the calls haven't started yet, then a 9/12 start date seems unlikely and 9/26 seems more likely. In that case, I suppose TPTB could just as well wait until next week. Unless they want to complete the calls in August for some reason.

What’s the record for most amount of time between the end of interviews and the beginning of offers? 🤔
Not counting 2019, of course.
