What’s the record for most amount of time between the end of interviews and the beginning of offers? 🤔 Not counting 2019, of course. First, 2019 still cuts deep. Second, I don’t know that the timeline information would be very informative since it was such a different system with different processes. It could turn out that this selection process was super-fast, depending on how future hires go. Or it could make history as the longest (ahem, second-longest, grr 2019) and we can all nostalgically reminisce about “that time when OHO didn’t even list the cities where they were hiring.” Here’s hoping hindsight’s on the horizon.

I looked at the 2017… last interview reported to be 8/15, first offer on 9/1.
But as Robe said, that’s probably apples to oranges for a number of reasons—the one she noted. Also, that two week gap was also likely because that was as long as they could wait.

I suspect that new ALJ training might be the hold up in this process. I know that the training materials needed significant updates and that no training is currently scheduled. Reading between the lines, I’m guessing the materials have not made their way through vetting yet. Maybe they don’t want to extend offers when they don’t know when they will train the new hires.

An interesting thought. But, it just may come down to, there's no rush (from SSA's POV). They have to the end of the FY, it's not expected to be a huge class, and it's a different hiring system than in the past- in theory all offers could go out the same day. And what's the point in giving the new hires more than 2 weeks to pack up their lives? Who does that benefit?

I have heard from multiple people that this training will be a virtual/in person hybrid. Figuring out those logistics might be the reason for the delay. I don’t know that the delay in training schedule precipitates a delay in offers. Several ALJs have told me they received offers without training being scheduled. Plus, calendar-wise, it’s a pretty sure bet that training will go from mid-late Oct through the first or second week in November, with the weekend before Thanksgiving as a backstop. Even that late-offer/report 2017 class was able to complete training before Thanksgiving. 2017 is actually an interesting comparison. Thanksgiving that year fell on 11/23. This year, it’s 11/24. Offers for that class began on Sep 1—which is the day after tomorrow. Now, they lasted for 2 weeks because there were 100+.

It looks like the new ALJs reported to their offices on 10/16. So two weeks of offers beginning at the start of September, and then about a month until the start date. As you say, they could start offers quite a bit later this year and still end up with a similar timeline.

It looks like the new ALJs reported to their offices on 10/16. So two weeks of offers beginning at the start of September, and then about a month until the start date. right—although some reported earlier. I know one who reported at the end of Sep. As pixie noted, in the past, when training dates were known, the easiest way to compute offer dates was to take start of training and count back 3 weeks, which was official onboard date, then 3-4 weeks from that, which would be when offers would end. Here, the backdrop of the weekend before thanksgiving (11/18) gives you a training start date of 10/24. Going back 3 weeks gets to 10/3 for onboarding, which is not the start of a pay period—so onboarding would have to happen either late (10/10) or early (the aforementioned 9/26). A three week window from that onboarding date gives you a window from 9/5-9/19 for offers to be completed… that is generally the latest offers could occur with training being complete before thanksgiving under the old timeframe.

Fingers still crossed for all those in the hunt. They are starting to cramp, but I will get through. I am a firm 9/8 now. Ha, ha.
Hang in there.

I am done with predictions but I hope we hear something in the next few weeks. I will keep my phone on. As someone said in a very different context, Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour.

I received info that the internal training website was update today. No dates listed, but it appears that the training will be virtual. With a combination of instructor lead training and independent study. Pixie

Looks like it’s there as a placeholder for now, so I would not take this to mean that training will definitely be virtual for all four weeks.

Hello All:
Longtime lurker here. I myself had passed the last OPM testing that experienced a rugpull and dashed many prospective ALJ's hopes. Unfortunately, I was not successful in getting an interview in the subsequent hirings after 2018.
Nevertheless, I wanted to extend a heartfelt congratulations to all candidates that made it this far. Truly, your selection up to this this point in the process is a real statement as to who you are, what you have done, and your consistent excellence leading up to this moment.
While some will be facing disappointment soon, know that this barometer of your mettle is (while perhaps flawed) a real reflection of what you bring to the table as a whole person. You should be very, very proud of yourself.
Finally, I would encourage those that do not get selected in this round to remember a new batch of hiring is on the horizon, and that this is only over if you decide it is over.
In the meantime, take a moment to step outside, let the sun hit your face, and remember to BREATHE.
Best of luck to all!

It's a shame that it's going to be virtual.
I wish I was in a position to attend the union training and that would be on my own dime. For all the virtues of teleconferencing, there is just something to be said for being in the same room as people.

Perhaps it will be a hybridized version, much like the training DWs have gone through in the past.

I received this from a new member:
"Good luck to all those waiting. I just wanted to relay that not all usual timelines may be in play. I was an outsider hired in October 2016 as an ALJ. Granted I was hired under the old system, but our hiring timeline was not at all consistent with most thoughts here. I interviewed on August 20th and for the call the third full week of September, maybe the 23rd. My start date was October 16 and I flew out to ALJ training only one week later on Sunday, 10/23. Class ran from 10/24-the Friday before Thanksgiving. Though I did it too, try not to torture yourselves. Best of luck to you all!"

All I care about is for the calls to start. If I didn't make it, that's okay, but if I did, I desperately need to know where they are sending me. I have done this whole process without telling anyone in my family, except for my husband (because we all have been so disappointed so many times...), so I am dying to know what’s in the future for me!

It came on Sept 29.
