Improper assumption, they likely took leave we are not allocated time to apply for jobs in our widget makung accountability tool. Although we had a heads up it was coming last weeek, some of us were busy working and got shut out just like you...even after paying our own way through the testing process in 2016 and scoring well but being executive ordered out of making certification with good scores. Unfortunately, I forgot to check here for info after several years of crickets on this particular job front.or I would've taken day off for a chance as a previously well qualified candidate ir I'd have taken leave and applied instead of spending all day at my job of 17 years preparing the existing ALJs for hearings next week drafting detailed prehearing reviews as an SAA who formerly drafted and signed decisions myself earlier in my career. Just as an FYI, AWT now has a "merit promotion" category that allows you to apply to SSA jobs with supervisor approval. we were specfically admonished not to use duty time, so no merit promotion time for this.

We were told by management in my office, that the ALJ job would be posted soon on the USA Jobs website, but nothing more. I searched every day, including yesterday, for the announcement - including all the key words, agency, etc. I heard today that it opened and closed yesterday. Did you have to have a specific link to find and open the announcement? Other than this forum, which I had not been on, was there any other way to get this link?

I found it by a simple search on USAJobs. No special link was provided to anyone I know.

I understand why a publicly available job like this doesn't get AWT, but other writers saying that they can only use merit promotion for details is concerning. It is definitely allowed for Senior Attorney and group supervisor jobs. I'd take that to the union if management denied my request to apply to either of those jobs.

It was there around 8pm searching "administrative law judge," as well as the EEOC CALJ job. Told a friend who had finished applying by 9pm. Saw my archived docs and by time I circled back a little while later, Nada... I bet they hit the 1k before 10pm.

May depend on region / local mgmt. becuz the category requires mgmt approval...other categories & times approved vary even w/i same region.

Does anyone know when 1000 apps were received. Like others wondering if I was one of the first 1000. I know it said my app was received

I don’t think it’s completely true that OPM is not involved at all. Whenever I’ve applied to jobs recently, OPM reviews initial applications to make sure you meet the requirements of the job, if you meet those you are found eligible and then referred to the hiring manager. I’d imagine a lot of people are going to be surprised when they are found ineligible due to the 7 years requirement. From my own personal experience writing “full-time” on my application wasn’t clear enough and I was found ineligible the very first time I tried. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is each individual agency's HR that is performing those initial checks, not OPM.

All the best organizations base their hiring on who is fastest to apply. Chortled at this. But then I got to thinking, this vacancy announcement makes perfect sense when you think about TPTB's modus operandi. What are we always complaining about? The agency only cares about productivity, efficiency, moving cases quickly, hitting your numbers, etc. Maybe they're thinking to themselves, "Well if you're not fast enough to apply within 18 hours of opening, then you aren't fast enough to hear and decide 60 cases per month." The Flash or Sonic the Hedgehog is the ideal ALJ. P.S. this certainly isn't the best way to go about hiring, but it kind of makes sense when you think about OHO's main priority.

I had similar thoughts. Though I suspect TPTB we're really just thinking about workload management and the law diminishing returns. Why hold the posting open for another day and double the responses to screen hoping for the perfect gem you have to sift to find when you already have good enough you can pickup from the middle of the road. Not glamourus, just practical.

They obviously know which cities they plan to hire Judges. So, the first level of triage will be to eliminate all applicants who didn't select a city that is in play for hiring. How much time will be wasted in interviewing applicants who aren't really interested in moving to a city they selected? As someone who missed out by needing one more day to gather reference information and only learning about the USAJobs posting later in the day outside the east coast, one more day would have been very helpful. Given the limited resources, why would SSA not limit the areas to where they know they plan to hire? That could weed out quite a few applicants not interested in the locations the play to hire. Many are only interested in the big cities, where I bet SSA was able to cover with the transfer list. My former HOD told me that my old office is down to 6 ALJs from 12, so they should be receiving a few slots. All below can be taken with a grain of salt b/c I have no actual knowledge. That being said… 6 ALJs from 12 is on par with most offices I communicate with (or 5 of 11, or 4 of 9). Many offices are at 3, 2, or (at least one with) zero. I wouldn’t count on the 6 for 12 being a spot actually hired for.

Good luck to all those who got their applications in on time. That said if the upcoming hire is about 25, how many applicants will actually be interviewed?

I think it will depend on the number of applicants willing to go to the offices to be filled. I think this first small hire will targeted to grab people willing to go anywhere.

The announcement closed at midnight EST - so if you’re on the West coast, it would have closed at 9pm for you and you would not have seen it open at 10pm pacific. There are earlier posts that say the ending date on the application changed to April 27th around 10:30PM EST - 7:30PM PST, suggesting the 1000 apps limit was reached around that time (give or take 30min/hour??).

The closing date on the announcement has been updated to April 27, so presumably the 1000 application mark has been hit. Owl posted at 10:30 Eastern (9:30 Central) that the closing date had updated. I don't think it had updated by 9:00 ET, or even 10:00 ET, or someone would have pointed out the change at that time. If anyone remembers things differently, please let me know, as this may be an important time to nail down! Explanatory note. I'm on Central time (Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) - 5 hours), and Owl's post says 9:30 for me. Happy Friday everyone.

I've also been told no AWT for interviews with other agencies. A blanket denial on completing applications seems to go against the MOU. The awt guide says that merit promotion can be used for a "reasonable time pre-approved by management for an employee to prepare and/or modify an application for an Agency vacancy announcement..." I'll move on from this since this is supposed to be about ALJ hiring, but I encourage any writer to advocate for the correct implementation of awt. Those hours add up and affect our production numbers. We all know the Agency cares about numbers, so we should make sure they are accurate.
