This thread is for all comments related to LB's unofficial July class blog that has nothing to do with the class experience. So jokes about dogs and hares, dead presidents, etc. should all be posted here. Thanks.

Day 4: Respiratory and Cardiovascular lectures - the only residual disease experienced by all was paralysis of the buttocks. The Docs were great, but my mind can only absorb as long as my rear lets me. There is a painfully obvious joke here that is far beneath me to even suggest. Is it related to relevant epidermis and as Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot would say, "the little gray cells"?

Well I think its a shame that legalbeagle's efforts to promote class camaraderie is not better supported. C'mon folks! Put in your two cents! lb richly deserves better than this.
Tell us what you have learned! Even if its how good French Martinis taste!

For G$d's sake, man, don't encourage the pup! She gets around enough as it is. Au contraire! Folks need to hear about the ok/poor/great food, the bar scene (or lack thereof), the too short skirts and muscle shirts, the droning and boring teachers or how intuitive and informative they are, the stupid rules and make-sense rules, the nearest Ross/Marshall's, where the Metro stop is, etc., etc., etc. And I'm not even mentioning all the delights DC has to offer...

This moving has gotten me a bit testy and out of sorts. Thanks, (again) ALJ.

I had already ordered my robe from academicapparel.com, so I didn't go look. There are a number of restaurants and cafe's in the immediate area - jus not as convenient as three floors down.

Judgejoyce's post below was moved from the blog to the commentary thread here.

By judgejoyce: Welcome to the wonderful world of ODAR. It is a good thing you have a good sense of humor. You have already learned about the failure of the equipment. Soon when you get to your hearing office you will learn about the lack of equipment the lack of ME's the lack of VE's and all sorts of other wonderful things. For many years I was a trainer during the first week of new ALJ training, until someone wrote on an evaluation form "She knows her stuff but she talks too much - it must be in her genes!" If I'd known who it was I would have done something about it - obviously someone who was anti-semitic as I make no bones about being from Brooklyn, NY and being Jewish. You will all soon learn that you are not really here to make good decisions, just to make quick decisions. That's why, after 27 years, and being the first woman elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Association of Administrative Law Judge, Inc. I retired in January. Ask yourselves this question. Who retires from a job that you can't get fired from unless you committ a crime? The agency wants widgets not decisions, and you will learn to turn out boilerplate decisions that are widgets. I wish everyone in this class luck. But watch what you say on this board, on the AALJ, Inc. discussion board, and on anyother blog you post on. The powers that be read this stuff and if they have a chance they can and will use it against you. I loved the work, I loved the people I worked with, but over the last 6-8 years the mission changed and due process, and a good result no longer matters, it is only the quick decision that matters. So at all times watch your back!

Legal Beagle, Thanks to you and your classmates for sharing your insights. The Kennedy Center offers performances every day of the year, and most of them are free. The last time I visited, we attended a jazz piano recital by 3 M.A./Ph.D. students from either Curtis or Julliard.....absolutely phenomenal talent. Info at www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/Best of luck to you and your classmates! Marathoner

Actually, for free, try the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center. www.kennedy-center.org/programs/millennium/schedule.htmlTake the Blue or Orange Metro (subway) line across the Potomac to Foggy Bottom, up the escalator and to your left out to the curb. Red shuttle buses ( also free) will take you to the Kennedy Center ( and back after the performance, although it IS walkable if you don't mind the heat.) The earlier for the performance, the better as it is tourist time in this town and if you wait until closer to start time, it will be standing room only.

There was some discussion earlier on that the Commish had said he was going to do the robes, but no official notice has come down, and the "budget crisis," we are not holding our breath. With our first hearings coming up in a few weeks and the time it takes to custom make each one, better be safe and go ahead an pay for them ourselves.

..., better be safe and go ahead an pay for them ourselves. That is, of course, if you are actually going to wear a robe. There has been some discussion to the contrary.

'hagg, we have already discussed this subject, with I thought, some finality. The conventional wisdom and morgullord's now famous story about the claimant who didn't know he/she had had a hearing with a robe-less ALJ has, I thought, quieted the robe-less advocates. Of course there are those who swear they will never wear one and I believe one Judge who posts regularly here who never has.

Well, Your Honor , I am not one who ascribes to your phrase "with some finality." As I recall the banter, there were some sitting judges who did and some who did not. Remember that horrible Gestalt poem from college - "You do your thing and I do mine, ...and if by chance we meet, it's beautiful." There are still some out there who might ....just might....still not see a reason to wear a robe. I have a friend (yes, I do!) who is a sitting ALJ who HAS the robe purchased for an outlandish price, but it has only been worn once and now gathers dust behind the door... Ah'm not suggesting the subject be re-opened; ah'm jes sayin' there is not consensus and this is not a democracy where the majority ( which you seem to claim) rules....

Me, believe the majority rules? Perish the thought! In my "old" Agency some do and some don't. Personally I think the best ones don't. No one has been confused about who they are, must be their gravitas. I was "advised" when I "scouted" my "new" Agency to wear one.
