I plan on filing a late application based on a 30% service connected rating-10 point veterans preference. I have read enough about the ALJ position to know that my qualifications are probably going to be fairly well received. Does anyone have any ideas about what I will be up against by filing late? I would greatly appreciate any input. Thank you.

It is possible, though unlikely, that you can make it through the process in time to be considered for the projected fall hire. More than likely, you are looking at possibly making a cert in the spring of 2010 if you score well enough.

Your road will be no harder and no easier than anyone else's road. Make sure you give OPM exactly what it wants -- if they say month and year, they by God mean month and year.

It will be interesting to see if you make it onto the register in time for the early 2010 cert. Good luck.
By the way, you are not graded on your qualifications. Candidates who think they are going to be graded on their qualifications eventually wind up posting here to complain about their score.

Yes, I'm paid based on my time sheets, but filling them out necessitates accurate description, honed over the years.

5 C.F.R. ยง 332.311 Quarterly examinations.
(a) A 10-point preference eligible is entitled to file an application at any time for an examination for any position for which OPM maintains a register, for which a register is about to be established, or for which a nontemporary appointment was made in the preceding three years. For the purposes of this paragraph OPM shall hold an examination not later than the quarterly period succeeding that in which the application is filed.
***
Based on the above, if you request permission from OPM and receive approval to submit your application (after furnishing the appropriate documentation proving you're a 10-point preference eligible), OPM will have to schedule you for the exam no later than the quarterly period after you filed your application. So let's say if you got approval and file the full blown application in July-September quarter, OPM will have to hold the test for you no later than December (last month of the quarterly period after the Jul-Sept quarter).
However, once OPM administer the exam to you, there does not appear to be a limitation as to how long OPM has to grade your exam in the CFR. So I would recommend starting the process ASAP. If all the stars line up, you are likely get your NOR by first half of next year if you get your application submitted soon. Good luck.

Good luck wyatt. It is a long process so start as soon as possible.
Although not specifically related to this thread, does anyone know whether OPM will adjust a score for future certs if someone becomes eligible for a veteran's preference after obtaining an NOR?
