I wanted to give you an update on our hiring. Since Congress passed our appropriations bill in March, we have hired aver 3,700 employees and expect to hire about 3,000 more between now and the end of this fiscal year. Please do all you can to welcome these new employees to the agency.
The President’s FY 2010 budget calls for a 10 percent increase in our funding, and the Senate budget resolution incorporated that increase. Although there is no guarantee that Congress will pass an appropriation at that level, we are planning for substantial additional hiring next year as well.
Hiring so many new employees requires adjustments in space, and we are moving on new facilities for many components. ODAR is working on opening thirteen hearing offices, four satellite offices, and two new National Hearing Centers. In addition, over the next couple of years, we are planning to open two new card centers, three new field offices, and an additional teleservice center.
With these additional hires, we expect to improve many of our key public service areas. We also anticipate seeing an accelerating decrease in the disability hearings backlog. I’m happy to report that the number of pending cases has dropped five months in a row and is down for the year. With the addition of the 148 new administrative law judges whom we are hiring this week, we should be able to continue to make progress even in the face of the recession.....

Perhaps no calls will be made today. But, according to the above, offers should be completed by the end of this week.
