I asked at the end of my interview yesterday and was told offers would go out the last week of September into 1st week of October for an October 11 start date. I was told the same thing. But he said offers could go out earlier than the end of september. He did say the October 11 date is set in stone. All in all the interview wasn't bad. I actually enjoyed it. It was an exhausting trip though. I'm still recovering.

If you look at a calendar, Oct 11th makes sense. If you have two weeks in the office and four weeks of training, that gets you "graduating" on Nov. 20th, the Friday before Thanksgiving week.

Where did you hear about "80 hires"?
That's great news!
Up until now, the anticipated number of hires have generally been "between 35 and 55".

A friend returned from FC and she had talked to one of those in command, so it sounds right. I figure that is why they went back to the register and got more people to interview. That way they will have the "240" to pick the 80 out of.

Here's what I've pieced together from my conversations with the people who sent/received/gathered the notices and are making the travel plans. No insider information here, just investigative reporting.
The first set of interviews, which are those of the candidates who received their notice on or about July 30th, stem from a list of 100 names sent to SSA by OPM in July. SSA then decided it needed 50 more names and requested a second list, thus resulting in the Notification to ALJ Candidate sent on August 6, which I was pleasantly surprised to receive so soon after NOT getting the July notice.
The SSA travel coordinator told me that she's arranging travel for 20 candidates for the interviews the first week of September. That would mean that a total of 30 candidates (remember, SSA requested 50 more names and I believe, perhaps just because of logic, that they are being assigned interviews in the September 2 to 4 block) are either no longer interested or live so close to DC that they don't need travel arrangements. Either way, I believe this bodes well for those being interviewed who are also interested in the large number of California ALJ slots remaining to be filled. Oddly, the list of open positions I received was far shorter than the lists those with July notices received. Most of the positions left were in California.
I'm hoping to see some forum friends at my interview in September. I would say that you can recognize me as the one wearing the black suit, but I have a feeling that will describe the vast majority of us.
Good luck to all!

Black or Navy. Both will work.
Likely number of hires for this group: 40 to 50.
Vacancies are all accross the country, not every office, but not confined to "out west" either. what offices are on your list depends on what offices you put down you were willing to accept and probably your OPM score and the scores of others that put down the same office.

kcalj: a friend was down at training in Baltimore two weeks ago and someone from the deputy commissioner's office spoke to their group and said the number of ALJ hires had been upped to 80. Additionally, someone else on this board said they heard that same number from someone high up while at FC. The jump from 55 to 80 may explain the second round of notices that went out a week after the first. It does not mean they will hire 80, but that is what they are saying they will. I think the real question is space.

Regarding the number of California slots that you mention, which appears to be 8 if my math is correct, can you please confirm the number. I think that I should have all of the California slots on my GAL and I have 5. Regarding the latest posting that refers to 40 to 50 slots, is that recent (ie after the info about the 80 and if so can you give additional info about when and from which source) or is the 40 tp 50 info from before the increase to 80 (ie, what is the latest?) Thank you very much.

The info regarding the 40 to 50 is as of August 27. It came from a very high source. I think they are limited by the number of ALJ offices they have available. I have never heard the number 80 anywhere except on this board.

Upon looking at my list of the openings remaining, it is a bit more varied than I recalled. Sorry for any rumors I may have started. Out of my 30 original locations, here's what are left:
San Jose, CA Pasadena, CA Los Angeles, CA Downey, CA Raleigh, NC Memphis GA (must be a typo, should be TN) Charleston, SC Richmond, VA Pittsburgh, PA Philadelphia, PA New Haven, CT Hartford, CT
I heard that there's a slot in Oakland, CA too.

Thank you for the responses, kcalj and falcon. As to the 40 to 50, hope it is incorrect and 80 is the number. I am sure that the 30 to 40 who might not get hired if it is back to 40 to 50, would be thrilled to get hired, with or without an office.
