Training for the next group of ALJs, who will be selected and notified very soon, will begin on Monday, October 26 in ODAR's Falls Church, Virginia headquarters. I wish the best to all of those waiting for the latest round of offers, hope that the selectees will find the training as enjoyable and informative as I did, and can tell you that my experience as a new SSA ALJ has been truly awesome and well worth all of the anxiety that preceded it.

Why was I thinking it was starting October 12? Did it change?

October 11 is the report date to the duty offices for the new hires (for two weeks).
October 26 is the beginning of training for four weeks in Falls Church.

True, true! The biggest headache for this pup who has never worked for the government before has been figuring out how to fill out those pesky time and attendance sheets!!!

Why was I thinking it was starting October 12? Did it change? You're thinking of the official first day of work. The official start date is always the Sunday beginning the pay period.

Keep in mind that October 12th is a Federal holiday, so you would report for work on Tuesday the 13th.

This may be a silly question but I really do not know what to expect. Do you just show up at the office on the 13th? Is there any contact with the office beofre that date? I'm not even sure what time to be there. What should I expect during that two week period?

Traceb-
I recommend you give your Hearing Office Chief ALJ (HOCALJ) a call. He/she can give you information about your office, and would probaby like to hear from you. "Core" hours at ODAR are 8:00-4:30, with flexible bands begining at 6:30 a.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m.
Good luck in your new position.

New ALJs are assigned a mentor, may or may not be the HOCALJ. The HOD (hearing office director) will introduce you to the AA who will help fill out all your paperwork. I would recommend that you call ahead of time, they can give some information over the phone about when they would like for you to report and answer any questions you have about the area. If the HOCALJ is not in ask to speak to the HOD. There is also a Regional mentor and a National mentor. Good luck and as the Chief Judge will always tell you "Have Fun And Smile".
