At an SSA management meeting this week it was said that 46 offers would be made on Thursday, with another 25 ALJ positions to be offered in January to backfill retirements. It was also said that a new OPM register will then be announced, although the exact timing of the register is unknown.

At an SSA management meeting this week it was said that 46 offers would be made on Thursday, with another 25 ALJ positions to be offered in January to backfill retirements. It was also said that a new OPM register will then be announced, although the exact timing of the register is unknown. It will be interesting to see if OPM actually refreshes the current register, creates a totally new register, or does nothing at all until the current register expires in October 2010. Based on what I have read on this Board, SSA intends to hire around 148 ALJs in fiscal 2010. The fiscal year begins on October 1, 2009 and ends on September 30, 2010. The last time that OPM opened the ALJ register in July 2008, it took them 7 months (end of February 2009) to come up with a refreshed list from the approximately 600+ applications they accepted. After that, it was 4 additional months before SSA received the certification, conducted interviews and background checks, and began the first training class in July 2009. If SSA does intend to hire 148 in fiscal 2009, and assuming that it will take approximately 10 to 11 months from the time that OPM opens the register until SSA's first training class, then time is quickly running for any individuals on any refreshed register to be considered for hire for fiscal 2010.
