On Tuesday, November 10 I emailed my request to change my GAL per the instructions (e.g., using the required subject line for the email to aljapplication@opm.gov). OPM acknowledged receipt by return email, stating they were "working on" it. I have not heard anything from OPM since that time. Anyone else in the same boat? Any suggestions, or just sit tight? I know it's the government, but it doesn't seem like it should take this long to simply return a form.

There is not deadline other than you have to make the request during the register opening, and you return the form within 7 days from when it was sent to you.

I also sent the email, I believe it was Tuesday evening. I receive the automated reply through the secure email system saying they were working on it. I have heard nothing since.

This is how they like it: OPM asks, you respond. Briefly. One would hope that they could afford you the simple courtesy of acknowledging receipt, but they hardly have the time nor inclination: Likely they would respond that that is why we have Application Manager.

I opened the Word document, put an X in appropriate boxes, copied the document, and pasted it into the top of a reply email. Should I have saved the Word document and sent it as an attachment?

Hello GAL-ers, I found a form on the OPM website, #1655, I entered my choices, found as many OPM fax ## as I could and faxed it in. I also scanned it and attached it to an email to aljapplication@opm.gov or whatever the email is. In addition I sent 4 email requests to OPM, and got acknowledgements, but have not heard back from them after that. I also snail-mailed the original to OPM w/my original signature. If you take a look at Form 1655 (there might be an "A" at the end of the form #), there is a line for "other" at the bottom. On that line I added an upcoming new office from the list of upcoming new offices. If I hear something I will let aljboard know. Dragonfly

wow dragonfly, they are gonna love hearing from you! Ha. I must say that you are covering your bases. Good for you.
I am interested if anyone will share the file names of the attachments you have received in your emails from OPM related to Geo changes.
When I sent my original email to OPM during the open period, out of an abundance of caution, I attached a copy of the geo preferences that I cut and pasted out of the announcement. I had added a column in which to add my X for each location I am interested in.
In what appeared to be an automated response saying "we are working on it" they had attached a file named geographicallocationselectionchanges.doc This is not the name of the attachment I had sent them. However, when I opened the attachment, it was exactly (and I mean exactly) the same document I had sent to them. I am trying to determine if this is there way of acknowledging that my changes have been received and excepted, which means I have nothing less to do. Thanks for any information you all can provide.

I still haven't received the form from OPM. I sent the original email and 2 follow-ups. How long am I supposed to sit tight and wait for the form to come?

I sent in my request via email on 11/10 at 4 PM EST and received a response from OPM on 11/12 around 4 PM. The OPM response had a file attachment for the "GAL update" (their term), and it appears keyed to the recent vacancy announcement. The name of the file attachment was:
2009ALJGeoUpdate Form11 09 09 FINAL1_20091112155158.doc
The email included the following instructions:
"You are receiving this email, along with the attached Geographic Availability Update, because you submitted your request to change your geographic locations during the ALJ vacancy announcement 2009ALJ-134575 filing period.
"Please follow the instructions below:
"You must submit the completed Geographic Availability Update via email to aljapplication@opm.gov no later than 7 calendar days from the date of this message. Updates sent by regular mail and fax will not be accepted. "Carefully select the geographical location(s) where you would be willing to accept an appointment as an ALJ by an agency of the Federal Government, by placing an X in the column marked “Available” next to the appropriate location(s). Thoroughly review the locations on the update as not all cities are listed in state order. "This update of desired geographic locations will become your new list of record and will replace all of your previous selections. "You will not be able to change your selected geographic locations(s) until the next ALJ vacancy announcement open filing period. Additional information regarding geographic availability is described in ALJ vacancy announcement 2009ALJ-134575.
"Sincerely,
"Administrative Law Judge Examining Office"
Not sure whether this is helpful to folks or not, but wanted to pass along the details.

Thanks, all, for your comments and info. It's some comfort to know that others face the same lack of response. I've still not received anything other than the original "we're working on it" response. So, I've submitted a brief follow-up email to aljapplication@opm.gov inquiring about the status. For now I plan to be patient, although I am concerned that silence means acquiesence to the lack of response, at least in OPM's eyes. Will advise the group if I learn anything meaningful.

I received the form at about 4pm Eastern. I promptly filled it out and sent it back. I received another bounce back with my files attached saying that they were working on it.
Did those who emailed their GAL changes in, with form attached, receive a bounce back email as well?
Thanks.

Just to let everyone know, after 3 emails stating my geo preference and that I had not received the form, the form arrived today. In another non SSA universe, the tech folks would have figured how to send the form automatically upon the arrival of our mandatory email, thus preventing concern and unexplained differering responses from the ALJ "Help" desk. On another note entirely, I would love to virtually participate in the ALJ Reject Club forming at training this month and next month. Out of 100 slots, my region is sending 3 attorneys, and I'm not one of them which is OK but I'll sure miss meeting folks from the board who have jumped thru the same hoops this year.

For those of you already on the register who haven't received a geographical update form to send back, you may find this info helpful. I was informed by email today that I wouldn't be sent the update form because I didn't need to complete one. I am already on the register but reapplied due to an iffy score. The email stated that my city preferences from my new application would be used for the current register. That's fine with me as my selected cities would have been the same, but I was surprised that it was handled in this manner. Basically, I just wanted to make sure that I would be considered for some of the newly built offices. I don't think I would have been had I not taken some action this go round.
