I just want to know if I will be busy with the ALJ process in the Spring. I need to plan a minor surgery but it's not urgent, plus I want to make plans to attend some out of state CLEs and to be selfish, I want to plan a vacation. If I get denied at this point, I will then just make my plans and then change them if need be. I remember waiting for the bar exam results and saying that either way I just want to know. Well, that worked out for me and it was a much longer wait than this (back then it was something like 4 months).

Agnes, when I took the bar exam, we knew precisely the day that we would be receiving the news. This is so not like that. You don't know when the news is going to come. Then when it comes, some people will not know what the news they got means. Then some people will appeal. And some of the people who appeal will get a fairly quick answer. And some won't hear anything for months, no matter how often they send emails to what has been humorously named the "ALJ Application Help Desk". Then some of the people who got to take the test and the interview will get great scores, and some will get awful scores, and some of the people who got awful scores will appeal, and not hear anything for a ridiculous length of time. It's best to try to stay patient. This board is a great place to vent. And I've found that Chardonnay helps. I'm buying it in those big boxes now.

I am trying to tell myself that this is not as bad as the wait for bar exam results. Back then, I could not practice law until I passed. Now if I do not become an ALJ, I can still practice law. I think that instead of trying to reason the process out, I should take your advice about Chardonnay!!!!!!!!!!!

Agnes:
Look at it this way: you're still waiting to find out when you'll be taking the second part of the exam, not when you'll get the results.
After you take the second part of the test, written and oral, then you get to wait again for your score.
After that then you get to wait for a certificate to see if you were selected because of the locations you chose and your score.
Then you get to wait to find out when they'll want to give you another oral exam (I'm being nice here).
Then you'll wait again to find out if you made the cut. Is you is or is you not chosen?
No forewarning, only guessing and the denouement is quick and dirty, unless you're chosen, in which case it may be like a hit on the crack pipe (I'm guessing) as far as adrenaline. Resign from wherever and get ready to move and train, etc.
So far I'm getting good at the waiting, but I'm looking forward to a little adrenaline rush one of these days.
As far as surgery, I'd wait until I knew when the written and oral parts were scheduled and then schedule it for soon after. You'll have plenty of time in between taking the tests and getting those results so you'll easily be recovered when you find out your results.

And I've found that Chardonnay helps. I'm buying it in those big boxes now. Or Scotch. Two fingers of a good, peaty, Islay single malt does wonders for one's patience...

I've been researching some threads posted back in 2008 and have learned that in both 2008 and 2007 the notices of results (NOR) were sent out just about exactly two months after the application period closed. We're a good ten days beyond that timeline by now, but there have been several holidays plus the federal employee use-it-or-lose-it vacation deadline since close of the application period, so it's not surprising that we haven't heard anything yet, but it seems likely that notices should be coming any day now.
For the more anxious or obsessive among us, it appears that in 2008 there was a hint of the coming NORs a couple of days ahead of time. Some applicants, checking Application Manager, noticed that the results for AR changed from "awaiting results" to OK with a check mark. Shortly after this change, the NORs started going out. Based on this information, I just checked Application Manager. No change, so it's back to my Chardonnay and Scotch. Good luck to everybody.

I wish I liked alcohol more than I really do. It's weird how the waiting makes the whole process take on a life of its own!

Unless I'm mistaken, the Notice of Results comes at the end of the three stage process (accomplishment record, written test, oral test a/k/a "structured interview"). This three stage process takes far more than two months. What generally occurs around two months after submission of the accomplishment record is the sending of notices inviting approximately half of those who applied to proceed to the remaining parts of the three stage process. I expect that these notices will be sent shortly. The wait is hard, but I found that this discussion board helped me immensely, particularly as I became more skilled in sorting out the wheat from the chaff and ignoring those posts that centered around acrimonious accusations and debates. Good luck to all.

Good luck to all. From my reading, it appears that a notice of results goes out any time there are results. In 2008, OPM sent out NORs two months after the application period, informing some applicants that they had not made the first cut, and inviting the rest to take the WD and SI. Here is the URL to a thread discussing the first-cut NOR in September of 2008. As you can see, the first notice was reported on September 29th: aljdiscussion.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=583The application period was July 30 and 31, 2008: aljdiscussion.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=543So the first NOR went out just about exactly two months after the application period. Of course, this does not tell us how long we have to wait, but my personal belief is that we will hear soon whether or not we have made the first cut. Good luck to my fellow applicants.

Latest rumor is that the SI may be moved up a few weeks ( days?) to sometime in February. Last time they started in mid October and did not finish until early February.

How can that be if it is the last week of January and the invitations for the WD have not gone out yet? Would they do the WD and the SI simultaneously?

When I took the exam. in 2007, you could not sit for the SI without having first completed the WD.

I have heard of them being within days of each other. I do not think they can get through both during the month of February but hey, who am I? My guess is that the plan for SIs to be in March/April is still in effect. I hope we hear soon.

In 2007, I was sent an email on 7/11 that I met the criteria to go on to the next step. On 7/30 I was advised that I would take the written part on 8/4 and the interview on 8/9.

Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. 'Forward, the Light Brigade! Charge for the guns' he said: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred.
'Forward, the Light Brigade!' Was there a man dismay'd? Not tho' the soldiers knew Some one had blunder'd: Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die: Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon in front of them Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, Boldly they rode and well, Into the jaws of Death, Into the mouth of Hell Rode the six hundred.
Flash'd all their sabres bare, Flash'd as they turned in air Sabring the gunners there, Charging an army while All the world wonder'd: Plunged in the battery-smoke Right thro' the line they broke; Cossack and Russian Reel'd from the sabre-stroke Shatter'd and sunder'd. Then they rode back, but not Not the six hundred.
Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them, Cannon behind them Volley'd and thunder'd; Storm'd at with shot and shell, While horse and hero fell, They that had fought so well Came thro' the jaws of Death, Back from the mouth of Hell, All that was left of them, Left of six hundred.
When can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made! All the world wonder'd. Honour the charge they made! Honour the Light Brigade, Noble six hundred! —Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Keep trying - Never Give Up! Never Give in!

"Half a league" - is about 1.73 miles, long way to ride into, and for the few who survived, out of, cannon fire. . .Thanks Penguin.

I can confirm that SI's will be held between March 15, 2010 and April 20, 2010. Plan accordingly. How appropriate that the SIs will begin on the Ides of March when Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC---a day originally set aside as a Roman festival day dedicated to the god Mars. A day of "death" for some (alas poor Caesar), but a "festival" for others....hummmmm
