I have heard that some ALJ's are being offered transfers. This seems to be SSA moving forward with the plans for a large hire this spring (if OPM gets its work done in time for spring).
Maybe OPM will begin testing and interviews soon.

Is the SI held before or after the written test, or are they held at the same time?

The WD first and then the SI. Never on the same day, usually days or weeks apart.

I believe that in 2007 the WD was first. I know in my case it was. WD on one day and SI the very next. Each was the first day it was given. They loaded the early testing with DC area residents.
For Italian I like a relatively new place Toscana on 2nd St NE by Union Station. For burgers (and Top Chef fans) Good Stuff Eatery on Pennsylvania and 2nd (or 3rd) SE is great.

With the July 2008 applicants, the "invitation" to test was sent out October 1. WDs were held in October and November. I think the SIs started in October, but took longer. Mine was in December - I can't recall if some were still interviewing in January. Seems like those who were in the first WD groups were interviewed first.

When I took the exam. in 2007, the WD was first and you could not take the SI until completing the WD. I took the WD at the end of July and the SI in mid-August.

The next class is scheduled to report April 11 and begin ALJ school April 26. It will come from the current register and fill the ALJ offices that are now vacant. Those transfer offers are apparently going out now. My guess is that the new class will only be 35 to 50. The large class will not be until August or September after OPM has updated the register. I think the cert for the April class will be coming out shortly.

Can those offered transfers or know about transfers tell us the locations to and from? Also, could anyone that knows tell us the date responses to the offers are due?

Once you get the offer you have 3 days to accept the offer or it is considered rejected. If you accept the offer you have 45 days to report to your new office.

FWIW, the transfers in years past were hotly watched and posted on. The best post I saw was that these locations were "moving targets" and that all kinds of things could affect them, including hardship transfers.

There is an updated transfer list out that is current as of just before the latest, 10/09 class of ALJs got on the list. While the new ALJs don't appear on the list, they are currently in play.

Can those offered transfers or know about transfers tell us the locations to and from? Also, could anyone that knows tell us the date responses to the offers are due? It would be really difficult to pull in enough responses for this to really be meaningful. The transfer process can really get somewhat drawn out since each offer and acceptance creates new openings where there will then have to be additional offers/acceptances. Its kind of like musical chairs with the ODAR office that finally gets left with an open space for a judge and no one who wants to transfer there being the office that may get a new hire. Even the 1/18/10 transfer list is less than helpful for folks trying to read the tea leaves as to where there may be new hires since its in flux itself. the names of the judges who have already been offered transfers and accepted have already been removed but the vacancy they created has not yet been offered for transfer. the one good thing it does though is list all the sitting ALJ's who have put into to transfer to the new offices opening this year.

And I suppose before 18 people ask how many slots appear taken in the new offices, this is what the transfer list has for ALJ's who have put in transfers for the new offices- Covington 6 Fayetteville 1 St Petersburg 18 Tallahassee 5 Livonia 9 Madison 3 Toledo 1 Valparaisso 3 Topeka 10 Phoenix North 8 Tacoma 7 I did that from memory as to where the new offices were so if I forgot any I'm sure someone will ask also, no ALJ asked to transfer to Anchorage (though since that appears to be the first new office that will open so perhaps transfers were already offered/accepted) so those of you who said "anywhere" might want to be careful what you wish for

Ditto, southeastalj. In fact, I know two judges who were offered transfers since the beginning of 2010, one of whom just received the offer yesterday.

southeastalj,
I think Akron, OH and Mt. Pleasant, MI are scheduled new offices. Do you have the info on those?
Also, does the list show where the transfer requesters are currently? In other words, if they get the transfers, what offices would that open up?

Akron 1 Mt Pleasant 0
the transfer list does indicate where the judge would be coming from, but I'm sorry to say I don't have the time to break out that data. and, as I said before, a judge transferring from one office just creates the opportunity for an existing judge to fill that slot, not create a new hire. theres no point in trying to guess where new judges will be hired.

Columbia, Missouri is not on the list and will not open until at least Dec 1 and maybe as late as March, 2011.
Anchorage is now open but I hear they need one more ALJ. If you are serious write to CALJ and put your name on the transfer list for Anchorage.
