Does anyone know of any ALJs who has been offered a transfer to one of the new offices that are opening? I am curious as to when transfer offers would go out to these new offices.

I don't think relocation money is available for the new offices so the staff will have to be local hires, meaning untrained. It is likely that the judges will not be transferred in until after the staff is trained and worked up enough cases to schedule for the new judges. There may not be any judges at the new office when it opens other than the HOCALJ.

I don't have any special inside info on this matter, but I must ask kalj...Is that true that SSA cannot seek staff from other offices to solicit for transfers to the new offices? If so, what a disaster in the making. New offices will have enough hurdles to leap even with experienced ODAR personnel. Without prior experienced ODAR staff transferring into the new offices, it will be a BIG cluster...

Many (most? all, except Anchorage?) of the new offices are near other offices. You would be surprised how many employees are communiting a good distance to work in their current office and would love to transfer to a new office nearer their home.

You also have to remember that the files at the new offices are actually already in the pipeline at the existing nearby offices. Tampa and Orlando most likely have the cases that will eventually end up in the new St Pete office. You could potentially have the ALJs for the new offices showing up and hearing cases before the office actually begins independent operations. It would be a pseudo-remote site of the nearby existing offices until it began independent operations.

You would be surprised how many employees are communiting a good distance to work in their current office and would love to transfer to a new office nearer their home. I know of one "staff" person who transferred to one of the newly opening offices with a full relocation package. This person was picked up from an office a considerable distance from the new office and was promoted to a lead position (non-management). It is expected that this individual will train other staff members, which indicates that those staffers will be new to the agency, or at least to ODAR. I know that HOD solicitations were made weeks ago for the new offices and Group Sup solicitations are imminent. Several HOD selections are now being announced for the new offices from those prior solicitations that include transfers from other offices. I could not say if this exemplifies the limit to which staff transfers may be solicited for the new offices. It may be that the agency will solicit for additional staff transfers, or it may be that, in the above case, an exception was made for a staffer who offered added value as a lead who could train others.
