So.....since the new class that is reporting in May does not have their 91 days in service until sometime around August 23, is it safe to say that this new class will not be able to transfer before this upcoming big hire? Thoughts anyone. I think you are right. With the exception being transfer to one of the national hearing centers. I believe you can transfer to one of those anytime if the agency needs the body because those are still non-union.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. Oh the money that could be saved by the government and the needless anguish over families strewn out across the country if they would only allow a transfer before the next hire. But I digress. Very happy to have the job, just wishing for a little luck on this front.

When do we provide our list of references--after we get our scores or after we get placed on a cert? Sorry that I am asking such newbee questions.

When you get placed on a cert, you will be e-mailed some attachments, including your background questionnaire, which asks for your references (among other things). I don't think the agency wants to expend resources for b/g checking until a candidate is actually on a cert.

Orly suggests in his posts that there will be two training classes this fall. If this is true, can we assume that there will be two rounds of offers?
Also, I read somewhere that new hires get 45 days to report to their new offices. Thus, offers would have to be made by mid-July in order to report by the end of August for the first, and similarly, offers would be made by mid-August for the second class.

No, the number of training classes is governed by the size of training facilities. The one big hire last June was broken into 2 training classes, one in July and another in August.
And the 45 days to report concerns offers of transfer to existing ALJ's. New ALJ's will not be given any specific number of days before reporting - they will just be told to report on day x. The first training class last summer had about 3 weeks from offer date to date of report. The second training class had about 7 weeks. They seemed to put more insiders in the first class and vice versa, allowing more time for those with private practices to wind things up.

No, the number of training classes is governed by the size of training facilities. The one big hire last June was broken into 2 training classes, one in July and another in August. Correct. The three training rooms at Falls Church HQ hold about 25 each, so each training class probably max out at 75 - 80 people. This upcoming hire for fall is suppose to be for around 150 - 160 ALJs. So two classes of 75 - 80 each would be the norm. Again correct. All offers, whether for the tentative Sept or Oct class, should be all going out at the same time, which is what they did last year. If there is a really good reason, OCALJ's office might let you switch classes. But since it's discretionary and they may tell you to pound sand, I wouldn't count on it.

Thanks for the clarification, but wow! Three weeks to have to possibly pack up and move yourself and a family across country would be kind of scary. You would certainly find out the true meaning of "where there is a will there is a way!"

I took the written demonstration on April 12 and things went horribly wrong. My document did not copy to the CD and when the OPM proctor tried to copy it to another CD it too was blank and the document disappeared from the laptop. Needless to say I was a bit concerned. I was told that because I did not "take" the test I would not be interviewed on April 14 as scheduled. I nearly went ballistic, which is pretty ironic when you consider the Nuclear Summit was being held simultaneously. I said I would come back on the 13th and was told that would be impossible. I was then told the next time the test would be given would be in June. After all that I received a call on the way back to my hotel and was told that OPM's General Counsel said it would be ok for me to be interviewed at my scheduled time. What my situation has to do as to when scores will be posted I don't know. I haven't been contacted by OPM for retaking the examination so it looks like no matter when the NOR are released I won't be getting mine this time around.

I was at the April 12 WD as well, and briefly overheard your plight. Truly unbelievable - especially considering the angst you already went through waiting for your invitation to attend the WD/SI. I hope all is rectified in your favor soon - for your sake! I trust/hope you got the name and phone number of the OPM GC you spoke with ... as we know, it's otherwise impossible to TALK with a human from OPM. Good luck ...

Kilgore, I'm so sorry to hear of the problems you had. When I worked at the Public Defenders Office, the investigators we had said that nothing really ever disappeared from a computer, that by hiring the right professional, you can retrieve anything. It's all there somewhere. Good luck.

Well, that's true Deminimis. He would have to have saved it for it to be there somewhere. Kilgore, if you do have to retake it, I hope that you don't have to wait until June.

This wasn't my first rodeo. I hit the save button at least three different times. Whatever. I have been told it is not the first time they have had this type of equipment malfunction. So it is just wait and see. Thanks for the good wishes.

Kilgore -- I only saw your message now but I have to agree with the other people who commented that if you saved your document then it is in the computer somewhere and they (OPM) SHOULD be able to find it. Good luck to you and hope it all works out!

I just received an email from the ombudsman at OPM. It said results would be coming out in a "few weeks" and that if I had any issues I could follow the appeals process.

"I was then told the next time the test would be given would be in June"
Anyone have any insight into what this might mean?

"I was then told the next time the test would be given would be in June" Anyone have any insight into what this might mean? Probably the periodic examination for 10 pt veterans. By law and regulation, OPM has to let 10 pt vets take closed exams within a reasonable amount of time after receiving their applications. So even after the ALJ register closed for the general public, OPM has to hold periodic exams to process 10 pt vet applications. So unless you're a 10 point vet or just won your OPM appeal, I wouldn't worry about the June exam date.

Please keep us posted on what is happening. My situation, clearly not as devastating as yours, was that my computer froze during the exam. They eventually got it going and I lost no work but it was still very disruptive. I am going to wait until I see the score then decide if I will appeal.
