Those hired in October 2009 were offered and accepted the job before October 1 and or the funds for their hires were committed out of the FY 2009 budget before October 1, 2009. When you buy supplies at the end of the year do the supplies have to be delivered by October 1 or do you just have to commit the funds for them by October 1? I don't know for certain how it works, but I'm going to check around. You said you heard the COSS talking. I was asking you for further clarifying info, not argueing with you. I just want to know if this is something you extrapolating or assuming about the FY 2009 budget and the number of hires or is it something the COSS or other official source said explicitly? The reason that I questioned it is that with regard to some other positions in ODAR I remember that people had to start on the job by a certain date or we were going to lose the FTE. This would imply that a position comes out of a budget for the year in which the person's start date falls.

COSS said in his testimory before a congressional committee that SSA was going hire an additional 226 judges this year. At the time he said it the October hire was history and the 56 that are to report in May 2010 had already been hired. what he meant by "this year" i do not know. I am pretty sure that the ones hired last fall came out of the 2009 budget otherwise SSA did not hire all that many judges last year. at any rate we will all know soon as the OPM scores will be out very soon and will be followed by an SSA cert within a few days. I know that they are geared up to do at least 320 interviews in June. That will be number of new people on the cert that have not already been interviewed and again that is just their best guess on how many will be on the cert that have not been interviewed. And I agree that your comments about having to have a certain start date is generally the rule but I believe that the ALJ hires last October were done in such a way that they counted in the 2009 budget year. I have been wrong in the past and I could be wrong again.

What about the 50 to 70 per year with ODAR who retire?

Through a reliable source, there will be approximately 400 interviews, 10 panels, 4 per day, 10 days. RCALJs and HOCALJs will be on the panel. Interviews to be conducted June 7-11 and June 14-18. Good luck everyone.

Nonamouse. Here is a quote from COSS testimoney: "In order to accomplish that goal, we hired 147 administrative law judges (ALJ) and over 1,000 support staff in FY 2009. We plan to hire 226 additional ALJs this fiscal year. In FY 2011, with full funding of the President's Budget, we will be able to hire another 70 ALJs and the support staff necessary to maintain at least a 4.5 to 1 support-staff-to-ALJ ratio nationally. With these hires, we will increase our ALJ corps to 1,450. "

Should I be so fortunate as to get an offer, what is the word on when offers will be made and when the next class will be trained? (Thinking positive!) I would like to schedule a much needed brief but non-refundable vacation in late October or November and I do not want to run afoul of the process or lose my money.

I think I saw on a general list of trainings being offered this fiscal year that ALJ training was scheduled for two classes - one in October and one in November. Can't put my hands on the email at the moment. I'll continue looking.

My info - a regular newsletter email - says Sept 13-Oct 8 and Oct 12 -Nov 5. I am sure those are subject to change though.

There has been some speculation in subsequent threads. Just curious (and praying like a crazy woman to be blessed with an offer this summer). Many thanks!

topher is an SSA employee, so I assume it's an internal newsletter.
Good luck, all, and try to avoid chronic injury from long-term crossing of fingers and toes!

I am a relatively new agency employee, and I don't think the newsletter is available to all. If I see anything else on the topic though, I'll be sure to post an update.
