Has anyone that expressed to OPM last fall a willingness to work at any and all of the various (150+) SSA hearing offices received an email from SSA's Bob Gehlken this week instructing him/her to complete and return their paperwork before the May 31st deadline?
If so, other board members would appreciate it if you would list each and every hearing office location that appears on the Geographic Availability List (GAL) that accompanied your email this week from Robert M. Gehlken, Facilitator, Center for Personnel Policy and Staffing.
There have been occasional problems with the GALs sent out (via email) by SSA over the past 2+ years. For those of us that previously limited our availability, the only way to assure ourselves that our GAL received from Mr. Gehlken this week doesn't improperly omit an office or two is to read a complete list of all the offices that SSA purportedly intends to fill ALJ slots in this particular go-around. This is why we need to see a list get posted by someone that previously indicated (to OPM last fall) their willingness to work at any of the SSA's 150+ locations.
Alternatively stated, in essence we need to determine all of the offices specified by the SSA when it sent its most recent certificate of ALJ eligibles request to OPM.

Be vigilant.... when the register reopened last November, I updated my GAL, but that was not reflected on the following cert. I had to go through OPM and SSA to get it corrected. To everyone's credit, it was corrected in time, but caused extra angst when none was needed.

You will recall that one of the criterion in the SI is your ability to handle "grace under pressure" to paraphrase Ernest Hemingway. Some folks, through talent, knowledge of the system or sheer luck blaze through this gauntlet and catch the brass ring in a matter of months. Others, like myself and friends on and off this Board take 2 or 3 years. The stress of all this? Breakfast of Champions! PS: This is easy for me to say now, but at the time...

I listed every city on my initial application in Nov (over 180 places). There must be some cities that other Agencies use where ODAR doesn't have an office.

Is "Pasadenca, CA" (and that's the way it's written in the email) a typo for "Pasadena"? I can't seem to find reference to the former online...

Carrickfergus,
Did you eventually talk to someone at OPM or did they answer you through e-mail (ALJ help desk)?
Also, when you got an offer, was it from a city on your expanded GAL?

Hurrywait, if you have better than 80.0, would you consider abandoning Pasadenca so I have a chance of getting a slot there and not having to move? BTW, I am told by a friend that there were no openings in San Diego county or Orange County CA. Does anyone know something different?
ps Bowser, you should get ten extra points for hilarity.

Is it possible to determine how many positions are being filled at a given location? Seems like that would be insider info for SSA only, no?

Is it possible to determine how many positions are being filled at a given location? Seems like that would be insider info for SSA only, no? I would also like to get an idea about the number of openings at each location. It would also be nice to know the number of total vacancies SSA indicated on the cert and the number of candidates on the cert. If anyone could share any insights it would be appreciated. However, it seems from other threads this isn't really possible because no one other than ODAR hiring staff know which vacancies are being filled. Plus, there are transfers that are being finalized. It really is a moving target. In the end, it wouldn't change much. Knowing or not knowing doesn't increase or decrease the actual odds of getting selected. You won't know you have been offered a position until you get the call.

Columbia MO will not open until next spring/summer so it is not on the cert. There are no openings in Springfield, MO There are 124 openings total (According to a post by ALJD).

Demelza, I contacted both Bob and Avery at SSA and e-mailed the ALJ help desk. The SSA folks actually called me back to assure me that the updated GAL was re-sent to them, and to make sure that I was aware of that. And yes, my appointment was to an updated location.
