In deciding if we should eliminate locations on the GAL, I would like to understand what the SSA policy is on relocation packages. If I currently work for the Federal Government, but not for SSA, is there a relocation package available?
If so, does it include moving costs, house closing costs, and/or a guaranteed home sale program? What do you have to do to qualify for the relocation package?

Hi. I'm a newbie to this forum too and I wanted to share that there is basic info related to your question in the "ALJ Hiring FAQ Part 2 - Training & Benefits" thread. The senior folks put together some great info.

LadyatLaw-- Thank you for the info. I have read that thread, and have looked at OPM's site, but my question is seeking additional information. I am reasonably familiar with the relocation process, but not all incentives are offered with each job.
Our last move included coverage of closing costs, as well as the guaranteed home sale program. I have caught threads which seem to indicate that those benefits might be offered to Federal Employees, both inside and outside of SSA. But there is no clear answer as to whether those incentives would apply for a potential move, if we were to keep our GAL wide open.
I am hoping that Forum Legends, or recent ALJ hires could give us a better frame of reference.

Historically they have offered the same benefit package to federal employees irrespective of the agency you came from. I think the theory is that you are moving at the behest of the government irrespective so there's no real justification for treating apparently similarly situated federal employees differently. That is not to say that something could happen this year different from previous years. It's just the way it's been

As long as you're a current federal employee (whether SSA or not), you'll get a house hunting trip, moving expenses, closing costs and a guaranteed home sale program. Although there were people in prior years that weren't too happy with the home sale program's offered price. I'm not sure if that's because the market tanked in their area or the Prudential program lowballed them. But yes, if you're lucky enough to get the job, there is a relocation package for all current federal employees. And if you're not a current federal employee, you're on your own.

Has anyone who was a federal employee and got a relocation package able to delay the actual move of family and household or delay the sale of their home. I moved into more affordable housing recently, after my house sat on the market unsold for over a year. I was able to reduce this debt by covering my mortgage payment by getting a renter. I am wondering if one year from now, after that lease expires, I could still qualify for the homebuying program.

It is my understanding that you have up to two years to take advantage of the home sales program.

Great news Barkley. Thank you. Now I just have to get the job offer!
