Does SSA ask you to rank the cities on your final GAL as part of the interview process? If not, is there any opportunity in the interview to express your preference? I talked to a sitting ALJ who said she got the 31st city on her list, so I thought maybe there was a time we could rank them. (Off topic: Also, are the references contacted before or after the interviews? Anyone know? I asked this on another thread and did not get a response.) I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you, and particularly you who are sitting ALJs or have been through this process in the past, who have given your time to help others navigate this system. This forum has been a VERY valuable tool.

Apparently back then SSA allowed the candidates to rank sites. But certainly in this century it has not followed that practice and has not done so in any recent hires. You will be given a chance to remove sites but not add any. You will not be asked your preferences. ODAR will consider that you have agreed to all sites remaining on your list after you are given a chance to remove sites. If you are lucky, ODAR will select you for a site. As far as references, I think the practice has varied. The agency seems to do a better job of contacting them before the hiring is done. Some of mine were called after I had been a judge for months. Good luck.

Since I only ended up with two on my list when my GAL was matched with actual vacancies, and one of the two is where I live now, I guess that's one thing I don't have to worry about. Since I don't know the anwer to your reference question, all I can tell you is that I'm assuming the calls to them could come anytime and getting them their letters, as the calls could start coming before the interview if I'm late in the schedule. EDIT: aljsouth was posting at the same time... I love the fact that some of the references were contacted so long after he was actually hired.

Thank you both. I actually got my reference emails out last week, so I am covered.

My experience from last year was that calls to references went out very shortly after the forms we just faxed in were received by SSA. I called one of my strongest references (a retired ALJ) on a Monday, he told me he was leaving for Germany on that Thursday but figured he wouldn't get a call for about 2 weeks, and I found out by other references that calls had begun on that Wednesday or Thursday. I still don't know if he was ever contacted.

I was out of the country until Saturday. I finished my forms today and have tried to fax them. However the fax machine is not answering. I think it was turned off for the long weekend. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I AM PANICKING.
I do have the fax confirmations showing no reply from the fax machine.

ANY SUGGESTIONS? I AM PANICKING. See post by ladyvike4ever below: For those who are still having difficulty sending there ALJ materials in, I sent a followup email to Avery Burroughs email address and it came back out of office, but in Ms. Burroughs out of office response she provided additional options to getting the ALJ materials in if you cannot get through by fax. Ms. Burroughs email address is: avery.burroughs@ssa.gov. Look at what she says to do in the alternative to faxing. I hope this helps those who have not been able to get their stuff in yet. Good luck!
