Any suggestions on good places to stay in close proximity that still have rooms available for next week? Everywhere I am finding is booked up.

I booked a stay at the Best Western Rosslyn/Iwo Jima in Arlington, Virginia. The phone # is (866) 757-8616. I don't know if this place is good or not since I have never stayed here but most of the places in Falls Church were booked. It says it is 5.3 miles from the SSA office building and google maps says it will take 11 minutes by car. Of course this is probably more like 30 minutes around that area but I think it is close enough. I hope this helps.

I stayed at the Hawthorne Suites Alexandria on Van Dorn Street. I took the Metro from the airport to Van Dorn, and then called the hotel and they sent a shuttle within 10 minutes, so that was easy. To get to the interview, I had the hotel set up a taxi the previous night. My interview was at 9:00 a.m. I set up the taxi for 8:15 am. The taxi was late, which had me worried, but it only took 15 minutes to get to the interview site, so I was still there 15 minutes early. I hear it takes 30 minutes at most to get from that hotel to the interview site when there is worse trafiic. It is only 2 miles away.

P.S. The walls were paper thin, so I suggest ear plugs. Also, try to stay within the reimbursement amount.

Hilton Marks Center in Alexandria.
Cab ride is less than $7, really quick. Less than a mile and half away and they were offering rooms below the government rate.

I can tell you where NOT to stay. The Hawthorn Suites sucks! At the bar I had a choice of Bud or Bud Light, which ended up being actually only a choice of Bud Light since they were out of Bud. There are no vending/soda machines in the halls. They DO NOT make the wake up calls on time. There was no trash can in the room. I wasn't sure if the linens, towels, or sheets were clean. They do not have much of a dinner or breakfast, and what there was was pitiful.
The guy at SATO who "helped" me make my travel arrangements suggested that I stay at Hawthorn because it is so nice and so close to the interview site. Wrong on all counts.

I stayed at Hilton Alexandria because its right across from the Metro. So you don't have to take a cab to and from the airport if you don't want to. The hotel is 5 miles from the interview site so you do have to pay for the cab but its only about a 15 minute ride. The hotel has a nice bar and restaurant. To get the rate below gov per diem I had to book a nonrefundable reservation, that might put off some people, but I wasn't planning on changing my reservation.

I am really enjoying Hampton Inn near Ronald Reagan airport!! It's about 20 minutes away from ODAR HQ. Cab fare was $20 including tip. I wish it had a restaurant in the hotel so you don't have to leave but depending on the time, you can go to the restaurant in the sister hotel next door and eat. I couldn't because that restaurant had closed for lunch at 2:00. I also wish it had more than one shuttle. But other than that, the shuttle has taken me to the mall which has plenty of places to eat. The room I'm in is spacious and it was below the government rate. I'm going to try their free breakfast in the morning. They have free internet in the rooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

I spoke too soon: in terms of sleeping there: Hampton Inn was too noisy outside to get a good night's sleep. I stayed on the side nearest the front of the building. Hampton Inn is on a busy street. So my suggestion then would be to get a room away from the main street and you should be fine. By the way, I'm sure this problem affects all of the hotels that are on the same street as Hampton Inn so be sure to request a room away from the street.
