I had been assuming that all new ALJs to be hired would receive their offers in the same wave - whether they were to be trained in Sept or Oct. I sense several folk on these boards expect the same.
But I was just talking to a colleague, and he had no expectation that that would be the case. To the contrary, he suspected that they would initially extend offers only to the folk being trained in Sept, and then would wait a month or so before extending offers to folk who would be trained in Oct. He also observed that some of the new hearing offices are not even finished yet, which made him suspect those offices might be staffed even later.
Thoughts?

In the past the offers were made at the same time for all training classes. I would assume it would be the same this time.

In 2008, 3 of the 4 training classes were extended offers simultaneously (with staggered reporting dates) and a smaller 4th class hired 2 months or so later. Given the numbers to be hired this year and the fact there should only be 2 classes, offers should go out all at the same time.

All information point to offers being made within a few days of one another for both training classes. The general preference is to have those selected that work for the Agency attend the first class to allow the second class to be made up of those from the private sector who may need additional time to close up their practice.

Not to quibble, (OK, to quibble,) there are those of us waiting for that call that work neither for the Agency nor the private sector. In fact some of us even work for other government entities which we refer to as the Agency which is not SSA. We would need no time at all to close up practices or even case files; we could move out the door so quickly that those files would be sucked out in our wakes. |

Following up on what Bowser said, does anyone know when the offers will be made for the ODARs not up and running yet? I had heard that several offices will not be open until next summer. As our scores expire in October, I am wondering if there will be another round of offers down the line and how that might work with start dates and such. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated!

Well, we don't know for sure that the current register expires in October. One of the new offices is in my area, and it has an address and a phone number on the SSA website now. So, I don't know which, if any, new offices are actually delayed in opening.

Thanks-I had heard that a new ODAR in my Region was set to open next summer, but I'm not sure if that's still true. I'm curious as to what will happen about scores expiring in October (or not).

Or assuming most everyone at this point is ready to say yes immediately it could be over in 3 (VERY) long days...
OK now-confession time. Who has been checking out robes on the internet? (hint: there is a wide variety of prices depending on material)

I'm thinking a European style red robe would be better :}
I swing between fits of can't believe I chucked all that money down a hole and wondering how long I have to take advantage of relocation benefits because if I'm selected the family won't follow for at least 8 months and maybe not for 20 depending on other variables.

Seeing as I have one city on my GAL, I'm just curious but have absolutely no hope! I know two recent hires, both from OGC, who only listed one site on their GAL (the same ODAR in fact) and both were hired to replace retiring ALJs. |

What was posted earlier was decisions made week of 12th, offers made week of 19th. I have two cities left from my GAL that actually have (or had) openings. One is essentially home, but double my current commute, the other is 8 hour drive or one hour plane flight away. I'd rather be home, but would take either. |

Would anyone like to venture a guess as to how long the wave of offers might take in terms of days? The current educated guess is the week of July 19th. But how many days of the week of July 19th -- three, four, five?  Peace and Blessings, Ladywordsmith  The time to respond should not matter. I think in other previous threads it was reported to be three days, not 24 hours (but that might be wrong). In any case, they do not refill a slot that is turned down - they will refill it on a future cert. Because of the complexity of the process, they don't have a 2nd choice waiting - the other two people "considered" might be three-strikers, or might have been offered other cities. Therefore, the offers can all be made before the deadline to respond runs out. I would expect about 20 minutes on average per call - including time to get ready for the call, explaining the purpose of the call, answering those questions that can be answered at that point, completing a record of what happened on the call, leaving messages for people, etc. At three calls per hour, 24 could be done per day by one person, or 48 by two. With two people doing it, three days would take care of the whole cert. So I would not expect offers to be made past Wednesday, assuming they start on Monday morning. |
