I'm not a football fan, but that seems like a great analogy from beginning to end. This past August, I attended the admin course at the NJC. An ALJ who was hired from the Feb 11 cert gave a lunchtime presentation about the ALJ application process. He said SSA would not open another cert from the current register because then "they'd really be scraping the bottom of the barrel." I was floored, specifically that he would (1) not realize that current register applicants may be attending and (2) think that prior selection was fully reflective of someone's skills and qualifications. For me, I may have been rejected earlier for significantly limiting my GAL or maybe I am the scrapings at bottom of the barrel. But even if that's the case, it's a barrel I'm very proud to be in. That's a pretty ill-advised thing to say. Wonder how many certs that person was on before being hired, or what gave that person any particular expertise to give a presentation about the process. Shows an attitude and lack of "verbal discretion" that I'm not sure I'd want to see in a judge, but that's just me. Anyone who is familiar with this board would know that there are lots of high scorers left on the register, or in the barrel, if you will, who through small GALS or some other reason known to few have not yet been hired. Then, there are many, many people with more than satisfactory scores, but more importantly the skill set to perform the duties of an SSA ALJ very well, who are still waiting in that barrel for their chance.

Pixie, Oh My Gosh how we've missed you and your wisdom. Thank you for the kind words, Tricia. There are plenty of others on the board with knowledge of how things work, so my participation is not needed as it was in the past. I still check in on a regular basis, but not much need to post. With 120 judges for 115 offices (or thereabouts) anticipated to be available this time around, it is a very good time to catch the train. Good luck to those of you who have been standing at the station for a while. Pix.

This maybe a ridiculous question, but... should I have gotten some sort of confirmation email back from SSA letting me know they got my submissions?

If the email you got is like the ones they send in the past, they say that they will contact those they DON'T receive anything from, so don't call them to find out if they received what you send.

nylawyer,
as observer53 says, they don't call except those they don't receive anything from, or as in my case, if they don't receive the entire documentation. In my case, they contacted me a few minutes after I sent my fax because two of my forms didn't go through, and I resent them.

I just received an email today at 11:15 am notifying me that ODAR "had obtained an additional ALJ certificate" and I was certified by OPM. This is my first cert and I applied in the November 2009 opening. My score was 58.29 and I only had 3 cities on my GAL. Is this a new cert? The email was not from the famous Bob either. Kristin Stuhltrager sent it. I have been religiously reading the posts since late 2009 and am finally lucky enough to have something to add! Thanks to all for the great inspiration and advice!

Interesting. Last time, they added some people late (myself included) It seemed like after they sorted everything out, they didn't have the minimum of three for each opening. It seems they have done that again. How many cities do you have of your three that are actually on the cert? BTW, Kristin works with Bob, she has for a while. The emails do often come from her, as do the offers. Good luck!

My three cities are in the Chicagland area-Chicago, Evanston and Orland Park. All three are listed on my GAL.

What does it mean when you get a corrected GAL? Two cities were added and one city dropped off the GAL.

I don't know what you mean by "corrected GAL" -- is this your GAL for this cert that SSA notified you of a change on since they sent it to you originally with the email? Maybe they made an error in the initial one they sent you with the email. Otherwise, they would not change at this stage.

It added a city (NYC/Manhattan) that was mistakenly omitted from the GAL SSA originally sent with the cert notification. Or at least that's my reading of the corrected GAL.

My GAL was corrected too. OPM removed a city, maybe because a transfer took that job, and added a city, maybe because someone who was invited to interview with that city on their GAL opted not to interview. This is pure speculation.

I received a corrected GAL too. New York, NY was included in my original GAL, but now is substituted by Manhattan, New York, and Albany, NY is out. The rest of the cities in my original GAL are also in this one.
