insert code here A buddy of mine who along with me is on the current cert got a call last Friday to verify information in his application packet, making him extremely hopeful that he is on the short list. Although I did not also receive a call, I am still hopeful. Good luck every one!

Although I did not also receive a call, I am still hopeful. Good luck every one! Those calls have been going out as part of the background check and are not necessarily indicative of a short list. So much for the sabbatical... A friend of mine on the last cert had her references contacted about a month ago, and nothing since. 2 locations on her GAL were on the list of sites. Not a clue where she stands though because of the subsequent silence! Gotta love the suspense! Now get back to your sabbatical and leave the obsessing to us in the current marathon!

Somehow it feels a bit "vulturish" to say this, but that that is hopeful news for those of us in the pike. Any approximate numbers available on that? (I would imagine not, as demonstrated by the endurance of the late Judge Harper, (sad news, my condolences to those who knew him)).

Any approximate numbers available on that? (I would imagine not, as demonstrated by the endurance of the late Judge Harper, (sad news, my condolences to those who knew him)). I think Judge Harper is a rarity. We've had a few retirements by judges that wanted out so that they could enjoy the rest of their lives outside of work. The factors that are leading many to believe a surge of retirements will be happening in the near future are the ever increasing age of the ALJ corps, the increased pressures to produce ever higher numbers, the lack of pay increases that have not given judges an increase in their three highest salaried years in quite some time, and most importantly, the new rule going into effect at the beginning of next year that 100% of accrued sick leave will count towards service computation.

It seems doubtful that the new registry would be filled before summer's end. It is more likely that those who have been waiting on the old registry would receive offers first.

Thanks!! I appreciate that because for those of us on the cert. list, it is nice to just watch a thread or 2 for new updates on possible immediate hiring instead of checking multiple threads on the blog.

This is truly rumor but from a reliable source-I was told hiring authority has been given and now the logistics of interviewing and hiring are being contemplated. I hope that is so. Then we can cut out all the "old cert" board stuff and concentrate on the new register stuff. :-)

I'm not sure (but am fully prepared to be wrong) that a July training for NEW hires was ever confirmed. There was some discussion here somewhere about whether it was in fact a refresher training or something similar that was actually scheduled... since I don't have a dog in this hunt, my memory is not too sharp!

He said Colvin and Sklar announced that funding had been obtained and they expect to make offers soon.

It has been really quiet around here about offers coming. We have heard rumors that training for new ALJs is scheduled for late July. In the past, new ALJs started at their duty posts 2 weeks prior to training. That would mean a start date somewhere around July 8th. You would think that offers would go out at least 30 days in advance since some people have to find housing etc. That would mean offers should go out by June 7, which is only about 2 weeks away. From what I have heard, they haven't even set up interviews for anyone who hasn't already interviewed. I guess they can do that quickly but the clock is ticking. Has anyone heard anything lately??

Offers have gone out with less notice, but four weeks mimimum is common. I think the rumored training is just that, a rumor, until someone can confirm that such training is actually still scheduled for new ALJs and not for some other group.

It would be very unusual for the training to start in the late part of any month. Training has almost always begun the first Monday of a calendar month. I can think of maybe one time it started the second Monday but never later than that. If there is a hire, it would make more sense that the new hires would report to their home offices in late July and then go to falls church the beginning of August.

So, what could this mean -- they just changed their minds about hiring off the old register? Come on, people.

So, what could this mean -- they just changed their minds about hiring off the old register? Come on, people. Acting Commissioner Colvin's March 2013 testimony before Congress: appropriations.house.gov/uploadedfiles/hhrg-113-ap07-wstate-colvinc-20130314.pdfSee bottom of page 8 & beginning of page 9 re official position on FY13 ALJ hiring. Specifically: "Hearing requests continue to come in at high levels in FY 2013, but we do not expect to have the ability to hire ALJs until the third or fourth quarter of FY 2014. Until we can hire more ALJs, reducing our average processing time will be impossible." While there has been a lot of rumors since then, the above is still the official position in the absence of a new announcement.
