Now that I received an invite to Phase 3, I have started to realize that there is at least a small chance of actually interviewing for an ALJ position. I was very narrow in my GAL selection during the initial application. If I wanted to expand my GAL is there a way to do it? I don't want to open the whole country, just add 4 locations that are within a couple of hours of where I live currently.
Thanks for the advice.

The quick answer is yes and no. Lol. In the past adding to the GAL was not allowed, but you could effectively reduce it by letting them know you didnt want to be considered for certain offices on a cert. However, as I understand it, those poor tortured souls on the current cert were given an opportunity to expand their GALs just prior to the cert in order for some with good scores but limited GALs to be considered to maximize hiring from this soon to expire register. Whether that is allowed again, who knows. If so, one would think it would be way down the road when the new register, like this old one, is close to being exhausted.

My follow up to this is: Did what I put down in the menu on USAJobs constitute setting a GAL?
I am going to give the help desk folks at OPM a couple of days to deal with the people who are in serious crisis right now and then ask them but if anybody here "knows" or just wants to speculate that would be great. I actually want to expand mine quite a bit.

My understanding, admittedly limited, is that, yes, the places you indicated in your original Assessment Questionaire responses was your GAL. Now, I do note there is a "change my answers" button on App Manager. Whether that GAL is one you can change or if it is just background stuff I do not know.

Thanks for the advice. I wouldn't bet on it. It's a very rare instance when they've allowed expansion. As the notice in the posting and in the online application says/said: "Please carefully select the geographical locations where you would be willing to accept an appointment as an ALJ by an agency of the Federal Government. Once this ALJ Job Opportunity Announcement closes, you will not be able to change your selected geographical locations until the next ALJ Job Opportunity Announcement open period."

I think the opportunity to change answers was available only while the initial application period was still open. After reading all of the posts about the need to cast a wide net on GAL, I went back in and significantly expanded my list before the March 15 closing date. Just another reason I am grateful to all who share information on this board!

I did not discover this Board until after the close of the application process - had I known I would have done an expansive GAL. Lesson learned.

Do not plan on being able to expand your GAL for the next few years, anyway. It was never allowed until summer 2012, when OPM allowed people to change their GALs if they wished. It appears that was done to expand the register a bit, in the sense that there would likely be more people expanding their GALs than contracting them, and there would be more people "available" for a given city without actually changing the number of people on the register.
I started out with a very small GAL, and didn't know any better as I hadn't found this board at that time. For what it was worth, I dramatically expanded it last summer, and when I started the new process this year, selected a wide GAL. You can always make your GAL smaller, if you end up on a cert for cities you've decided you don't want to be considered for.

Excellent information Observer--I am very grateful, although I already have a somewhat limited GAL I put some cities on there without really thinking my choices through and I would hate to get get a job offer for such places if I successfully finish this marathon and get a job offer after SSA interviewed me.
