Thank you saaer for the post and information, it is much appreciated. The one thing I see is that a lot of ALJs want to transfer to other offices, whether to get closer to home or for other reasons. What it tells me is there will be little chance to transfer elsewhere for a while once a new ALJ is hired unless it is an unpopular place or there are very extenuating circumstances.

Thank you! Confirms previous information that Fort Lauderdale and Miami will indeed be difficult to get as a first assignment.

Add my thanks. I'm assuming a judge that puts more than one city on their wishlist appears up to 3 times on the list? like a Phoenix judge wants to go to seatle, ortland or san fran. that would show up like three transfer requests out of Phoenix?
As I suspected, my home office isn't all that popular. Onlt one request to come there. And I actually know that alj and he has actually turned down the transfer once and told friendsin my office that he has rethought and his family likes where they currently are. Def makes me feel better.

I looked on AFGE's website and presume that the transfer list must be in a restricted area. Is there a public link that I am missing? The union is not AFGE, it's AALJ, and the transfer list is accessible only to members of the union. Thanks for the clarification. Thank you, ssaer - you are very appreciated.

Thank you SSAER. Seems everyone in Puerto Rico wants out. You can improve your chances exponentially if you can get on the Puerto Rico bilingual mini cert. But you are likely to get stuck there for years since transfers will come to a snail place in the future.

WV seems like a nice option if you want east of the Mississippi. It's beautiful from my limited exposure to it. And if John Denver sang about it, how can you go wrong? Could be a bit cold in the winter tho ...

My current federal salary is higher than the lower ALJ salaries for some localities. Would I be paid at least as much as I am now? I know how this works on the GS chart but this is a different scenario.

Would someone with access be willing to post the transfer list? names of course redacted with just the numbers. Following is the March transfer list. It is organized by region to which transfers are requested. First city on each line is the city where a judge requesting a transfer is currently located; second city is where the judge wants to transfer to. Numbers at the end of each line are irrelevant, they just refer to the numerical office codes assigned to particular offices. Thank you for this! The Albuquerque, office on the list is that the NHC or the regional office or both? If the ALJs assigned to the NHC's lose the transfer preference does it seem likely that the NHCs will become less desirable locations? Does anybody have any insight why the Vegas and Reno offices aren't feeling the love? It doesn't look like people are trying to leave but it doesn't really look like people are trying to get there either?

The Albuquerque office listed is the hearing office, not the NHC. NHCs are not listed on the regular transfer list and have been subject to a different process, with applications being sought from current ALJs by means of periodic vacancy announcements. If judges in the NHCs lose the current transfer preference, this will likely reduce the number of applicants who wish to transfer to NHCs. I base this upon the fact that, in the past, many have transferred to NHCs with the specific goal of using the transfer preference to expeditiously move somewhere else, unencumbered by the transfer list.

When you go on the transfer list for a geographical area with multiple offices in close proximity (ie Dallas/Dallas North or Nashville/Franklin, etc) is one of your three choices for the specific office or for the specific geographical location?

It's office by office, based on eerything I've ever read here. A trsnsfer request to go to say, Phoenix, and one to Phoenix North, counts as two requests. You see requests for both offices on the transfer list posted here.

My current federal salary is higher than the lower ALJ salaries for some localities. Would I be paid at least as much as I am now? I know how this works on the GS chart but this is a different scenario. Actually you would probably have your pay set using the highest previous rate method. Take your base GS salary (no locality added in) and see where you fall on the ALJ basic pay scale (without locality pay). If you fall in between two steps (say D and E) the normal course is to bump up to the higher pay. For me, even if selected I would be facing a pay cut (I'm a stepped out GS-15 on retained pay). Hope this helps.
