How fast do you go up the ALJ salary chart? Generally, you reach the max at 7 years. Start at ALJ3A, yearly to 3D, then 2 years each for 3E and 3F. However, depending on locality pay or other factors, you may get there before 7 years. There are also ALJ2 and ALJ1s, based on factors I can't recall off hand, but the salary for those are the same as the max salary for ALJ3.

I asked this question on some other thread where the steps were being discussed, and I don't think I got an answer. Step increases for federal employees were frozen some time back (18-24 months?) by order of the President. Did that apply to ALJs?

Step increases were not frozen. Only COLA raises were frozen.

Step increases were not frozen. Only COLA raises were frozen. Thanks! Now looking at some news articles on the issue, they seem to use the terms interchangeably as if they mean the same thing, which they clearly don't.

Don't be surprised to see step increases (or within grade increases - aka WGIs) frozen in the near future. That is the next step that could be taken by Congress. Individual Agencies do not have control over this.

I am a March 2013 headed to DC newbie. When I applied, listed 10+ cities. Upon reflection, I would only accept a position in my home state. Questions: (1) How do I limit my GAL? (2) When do you suggest I limit my GAL? Now? Not until after the SI? Thanks!

If you make a certificate with SSA, you will (probably) be asked if you are still available for the cities you originally selected. At that point, you can notify the Agency that you will not accept any of the cities outside your home state. Once done, it cannot be undone. Patiently, do you express the desire to drop certain locations before or after your interview with SSA? I assume doing so would be at your own risk because they do not tell you which locations they are looking to hire for. I signed up for the Puerto Rico locations and the wife has said she is not up to make such a move. If I get to that point where I am called for an interview, I was just going to decline the Spanish/Bilingual interview and take myself out of the running for those locations that way as opposed to telling SSA I no longer want to go to Puerto Rico locations.

When you are placed on a cert, you geta lot of paperwork to fill out, including a list of the cities that are on your GAL that are also on the cert. You indicate on that paper which cities you are willing to take a position in. All the paperwork has to be sent back BEFORE you ever go to an interview with SSA. If other cities you would decline are not on a given cert, they stay on your GAL until they do show up on another cert and you are sent another list.
