My SSN came from Alabama. Maybe they do one area if there are enough or by region if they need enough to make a group.

How did I get thrown in with all of you Southerners? My dates are 10 and 11 and I am an IA or WI SSN.

Well IA begins with a 4 like the others and WI begins with a late 3, which is close enough for govt work!

You weren't thrown in with all of the Southerners. My SSN is from the south (the Carolinas) and I am scheduled for the last week in August. Here is a list of where SSN's used to fall geographically (SSA is now randomly assigning numbers).
001-003 New Hampshire (NH) 004-007 Maine (ME) 008-009 Vermont (VT) 010-034 Massachusetts (MA) 035-039 Rhode Island (RI) 040-049 Connecticut (CT) 050-134 New York (NY) 135-148 New Jersey (NJ) 159-211 Pennsylvania (PA) 212-220 Maryland (MD) 223-231 Virginia (VA) 232* West Virginia (WV) North Carolina (NC) 233-236 West Virginia (WV) 237-246 North Carolina (NC) 247-251 South Carolina (SC) 252-260 Georgia (GA) 261-267 Florida (FL) 268-302 Ohio (OH) 303-317 Indiana (IN) 318-361 Illinois (IL) 362-386 Michigan (MI) 387-399 Wisconsin (WI) 400-407 Kentucky (KY) 408-415 Tennessee (TN) 416-424 Alabama (AL) 425-428 Mississippi (MS) 429-432 Arkansas (AR) 433-439 Louisiana (LA) 440-448 Oklahoma (OK) 449-467 Texas (TX) 468-477 Minnesota (MN) 478-485 Iowa (IA) 486-500 Missouri (MO) 501-502 North Dakota (ND) 503-504 South Dakota (SD) 505-508 Nebraska (NB) 509-515 Kansas (KS) 516-517 Montana (MT) 518-519 Idaho (ID) 520 Wyoming (WY) 521-524 Colorado (CO) 525 New Mexico (NM) 526-527 Arizona (AZ) 528-529 Utah (UT) 530 Nevada (NV) 531-539 Washington (WA) 540-544 Oregon (OR) 545-573 California (CA) 574 Alaska (AK) 575-576 Hawaii (HI) 577-579 District of Columbia (DC) 580* Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico (PR) 581-584 Puerto Rico (PR) 585 New Mexico (NM) 586 Guam, American Somoa, Philippine Islands 587 Mississippi (MS) 589-595 Florida (FL) 596-599 Puerto Rico (PR) 600-601 Arizona (AZ) 602-626 California (CA) 627-645 Texas (TX) 646-647 Utah (UT) 648-649 New Mexico (NM) 654-658 South Carolina (SC) 667-675 Georgia (GA) 680 Nevada (NV) 700-728 RR Retirement Board (All States - until July, 1963) 764-765 Arizona (AZ)

My testing was last week (the first week), Weds/Thurs, and my SSN was allotted in New York. So, a little more proof that test slots are assigned geographically. Or, to put it more poetically, OPM got all of the "0"s out of the way the first week.

The SSN stuff is interesting, and it got me curious to know how I got line since my number does not correspond to my birth state. I'm guessing my parents either listed a GA address as their residence while my dad was wrapping up his military service, or they waited until they returned to GA to apply for my SSN. I doubt either remembers.

Most of us, including the 30 something's, probably didn't get SSN's when we were born. The IRS began requiring the on tax forms sometime in the 80's. My son was born in MD (NNMC in Bethesda) but his SSN is from HI. Heck, my original SSN card has my nickname on it because my family was living in a small town in the south and they didn't require a birth cert. It got corrected eventually.

These days, kids get SSN's as newborns. Back im MY day , I got mine in high school when I was applying for the SAT and ACT tests, I think, which used the numbers as IDs. I still live in the state where I got mine, but lots of people don't.

I think the ssn groupings for test days is as proven a theory as we can get on a board like this. Of course there are outliers that were probably droppedin to fill out a group or got in a diff group due to an accomodation request or resched or maybe a conflict with an interviewer. As observer noted, many like me don't live in the state they got their ssn in. But many do and I bet most livein the same general geographic part of the country. Which probably made it easier on opm in picking the judges and private attorneys on the SI panels to avoid conflicts. If all candidates on a particular day have ties to the northeast, prolly not gonna have to many know some lawyer or judge on their panel if those lawyers and judges are selected from out west. If that theory is accurate, all of us fine southern bred ladies and gents going in Sept may find ourselves being graded by a bunch of damn yankees

Reaching back to the original question...there are a veritable host of outstanding reasonably priced dining options in DC and in the relative area of the testing site. Its a question of how much effort you want to expend in getting there from your hotel. I would consider Old Ebbet's Grill on 15th, a few blocks up from the White House. Make reservations! I believe that they make the best Cosmopolitan's in DC - if you imbibe. Old style elegance, outstanding service and varied reasonably priced menu. This place is well worth the walk or cab ride.
