Hi everybody, I have been lurking here since the job announcement and really appreciate all the information and intel I've gotten from you all. I applied because the job announcement I saw said there was an opening in my town for a State Department ALJ, and I thought that might be interesting. I also thought that there was significant potential income increase from my current part-time position with a state agency. However, it looks like there are two chances of working for the U.S. State Department: slim and fat.
I was invited to go to DC for the next round of testing, and I just withdrew my application. My family is all here, including my elderly and infirm father and my college student son, and I don't want to have to move away from them for a year, or two, or three. I greatly enjoy my current job and my 3-day-a-week schedule. You all have given so much great into the nature of this ALJ job, which I truly appreciate. However, given the probable need to relocate, the rigidity of the job requirements, and the experiences of my friends who left state government to work for the feds (and are now screaming to come back to the state), the money isn't worth it. I'll have to work longer, but since I enjoy my job, that shouldn't a problem (though since I work for an elected official and the next election is in 2014, I may be kicking myself late next year).
Good luck to all of y'all who are moving on through the process. Godspeed!

I wish you well in the future and I hope you continue to find employment you love and enjoy doing. Everyone has to make the individual choice for themselves based upon the circumstances they face. Good luck!

One down (insert evil laugh) Just kidding. Hate to see anyone bail out if they truly want the gig and have what it takes. Almost hate that as much as seeing someone get the job with unrealistic expectations, be miserable in the job then make everyone else in the office miserable too. Yours sounds like a well reasoned decision based on examining the facts from all angles important to you. I applaud you for it. Best of luck in the future. I

Agre, good luck in your future. And good luck with the elections next year. I'm sorry you don't want to continue with the path of the ALJ. But at least you figured it out before putting the time and expense into the next round. Feel free to "lurk" in the future, in case you decide to try it again next time.

Agretread - I think we are in the same geographic area. I'm sorry you don't want to continue. There are probably others who also face the same decision as you. Good luck in the future!

At least the limbo of not knowing what lies ahead is over for you, and you can make definite plans now. I find that is the difficult part as so many have said throughout the years....the limbo of not knowing for sure "if" and/or "when" and "where." Not easy when you have family to consider! And simply put, there are many things in life that are more important than a title and money. Many more things. Take care.
