My alternative will be to get up tomorrow, strap on my combat boots (dress shoes) and go to Court and practice law. As most of us know from private practice, on any given day of the week, we are busier than a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest.
Every day that I live on this side of the dirt is a great day, no matter how bad it seems, ALJ or not.

I plan to continue getting yelled at by clients (usually first in line), claims reps and then ALJ's. Fed court justices are usually too nice to yell at SSA or Legal Aid.

At ODAR yesterday I said the same thing: I love my job. I couldn't imagine any other job making me happier than what I do right now. So, if I don't get the ALJ job, I will continue representing claimants in SS hearings. I will continue to expand my practice. And, a long term goal would be to expand enough to justify hiring me some additional help so that I could have some home time with my children (though, for anyone in private practice, they know the more work the less time at home). My choice to apply for the ALJ job was to give me time with my family, not because I am unhappy on my current work situation. So, it's a win/win whether I get the ALJ job or not.

I like your answer lurker and it is probably what I will continue to do (my present job). However, I might run for Congress as I couldn't do worse than any of them in there now. LOL! Now, that I see funky's answer, I agree with him, I want aljfaq's job.

Actually, the odds are probably slightly better that I would hit the lottery before getting picked for an ALJ spot - so, there's that. And I hear that the hot dog stand business is still a good one, if you pick the right location. The guy in front of my building is doing well enough to give out free hot dogs every now and then. Beyond this, I haven't thought much about it. But whatever I decide, I'm sure attitude is half the battle and thus, I adopt Tigerlaw's sage view. I am on the federal pension track so all I have to do is get up in the morning and work hard everyday. When it all gets to be too much, as it is these days with the knuckleheads in Congress, I will tip my hat and see if the legal aid folks can use me. It will be nice to appear before my colleagues on the other side of the bench. |

Actually looking at going back for a refresher in Probate, Wills and Trusts and doing some Elder Abuse work in the community. The aging population is growing and the Boomers need some guidance. Wont make a fortune, but dont really need too, need to be able to pay a few bills, watch the kids and garden grow and enjoy simple pleasures. Little office, little work, big smile!

I was a claimant's rep before becoming an ALJ. I agree with your post and you will have more time with your family, or at least a more regular schedule (no working all weekend or staying up till midnight to submit a brief by ECF to the district court or paper for some COAs). The other thing is that my workload as an ALJ is about three times greater than it was as a claimant's rep, so I'm able to have an impact on about three times more people by either finding them disabled or telling them it's time to start looking for work. I slept well before becoming an ALJ, and I still sleep well. |

Stay with my law firm until my net worth hits the target figure I have in mind (at which point I still won't be rich but at least will never have to worry about my/my wife's next meal). After that, not sure. Maybe try to find a job with some of the characteristics I like about the ALJ gig: 9-to-5ish with some independence. Or maybe try out as a sole practitioner. Or maybe hang it up altogether, although that would require some belt-tightening. (I'm 57 now, btw.)

I will probably stay put in my in house counsel job. Interesting work, great colleagues, no billable hours. Still, becoming a judge would be the fulfillment of a long-held dream.

mcb, only people in private practice can get the staying up to midnight to finish that brief or that 2am call from the drunk client in jail who got picked up for a DUI. Those are things that I will never, ever miss! But, overall I love my job. And I am going to be happy no matter where I am a year, two years, or even 10 years from now.
