Reports this morning say she drove over some "temporary barricades" in a driveway leading to the White House. A motor vehicle is in fact a deadly weapon. I saw the video where she made one of her "escapes" by backing up, narrowly missing people on foot. At another point, an officer was flipped over the hood of her car. Those were not the only lives she endangered when trying to get away. I'm not going to second guess the officers on that one.

I am with bartleby on this one regarding the mentally ill woman. The secret service isn't the best to handle such a situation as this was yesterday,

here in washington, we don't have "a" police department. there are over 30 police forces and police agencies that have jurisdiction over various parts of the district and they are very highly trained. we have it all here, diplomats who turn the key to their car in the morning only to be blown to pieces in an explosion; one of the highest murder rates in the country; people parking a truck filled with explosives against the side of the Washington Monument and threatening to detonate; someone who intentionally flew a plane into the white house (thank God it was a Cessna and bounced off); and of course the very big plane filled with people that destroyed the west wing of the Pentagon. with all of this we rarely, if ever, have police brutality incidents because, as I say, our guys and ladies are highly trained. From the videos, you can see that many cops with guns pointed, tried NOT to shoot. That's why she made it all the way to the Capitol grounds. If there had been overkill, the baby probably would not have made it. I feel very, very sorry for the lady and her family but everyone here knows that if you run your car into the outer perimeter of the white house, refuse to follow orders to stop, and then careen towards the U.S. Capitol endangering lives all the way, something really bad is going to happen to you. If she did have plastic explosives in her trunk, alot of innocent policemen and members of the public could have been killed. I thank God for our highly professional police forces.

I have followed the story of the woman killed in the situation in D.C. yesterday. Does it seem funny to anyone else that the ladies car was not damaged on the front end considering she "rammed" the security posts? Why wasn't her air bag deployed? I question whether the police over-reacted? We offer hearings for mentally impaired claimants everyday and the Agency has no problem posting our names, pay/deny rates, and salary information on the internet. Someday, someone will suffer immensely from this.. Try to find any info on any IRS employee on the internet. Ain't gonna happen.. That's true. Because of the amount of publicly available info for ALJs, I've even been able to identify several of the ALJs on this board and Google street-viewed their homes to check out their standard of living to compare what life would be like if I made the jump. Aljfaq, (&Dibs) Dibs rules say You can't claim something when the holder is currently occupying it. You can dibs GALs but not an ALJ domicile.

There's a "like" (thumbs up) button next to the quote button on each post. Thanks! Reminds me of what I hear in my house--don't ask--look!

8-)Bart, as you know I was an ALJ with OHA for 30 years, from 1976 until 2006. I worked many details and remote hearing sites with no security, not even in the field office. It was not until in the latter years of my tenure were we able to get security guards and magnomenters, and it had to be justified. It's no use going into detail some of the incidents that arose in those years, but you can imagine. That's how much your government cares for you. Circumstances have changed that, but I guess I was lucky.

It's a shame it is being forced on you because you attended a conference scheduled well prior to the shutdown. The furlough notice that Bartleby and the other ALJs that attended the conference received is just temporary. It only covers the time they were not hearing and deciding cases, which is the only thing ALJs are supposed to be doing while they are in excepted status. Once Bartleby returns to work next week he will no longer be furloughed. He may or may not get paid down the road for the furloughed time. He will get paid eventually for the time he works as an excepted employee (just not till there is a budget).

I received notice in mail yesterday that SSA has filed a complaint with MSPB to seek furlough of 387 judges listed on appended exhibit. The furlough would be up to 30 calendar days and 22 work days. It seeks a finding of good cause to furlough Respondents. By footnote reference to exhibit, there is a list of all ALJs (1) with previously approved, but now cancelled, leave for any period during FY 2014 and (2) that had been approved use of duty time to attend any training the first week of October 2013.
Interestingly, this complaint is signed and dated October 1, 2013. It does not reference those ALJs on the list that in an abundance of caution decided to cancel attendance at Santa Fe conference and were in work status at offices Tuesday forward. Interesting.

The complaint instructed us to report back to work as soon as we are back in town as in recall. The Union will be responding to the complaint immediately.
