Does any one know if Sequestration has an effect on the planned hiring? Are the estimates of the number of new hires heard here and elsewhere dependent on sequestration going away?

Yes, because Sequestration limits the amount of money SSA has to spend in the fiscal year on it's program and it's employees. This is a major reason why SSA only hired 29 ALJs recently despite the fact it was around 90 ALJs short of total replacement. Hence, as long as Sequestration remains in effect the hiring of future ALJ will be at minimal numbers with not all those ALJs who leave being replaced. Perhaps, it is likely that only 1/3 of the ALJs will continue to be replaced as long as Sequestration remains in effect. Hopefully, a full budget agreement will one of these days end Sequestration and allow full hiring at SSA/ODAR again.

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of. I don't know what made me think (other than deluding myself) that the hiring numbers were those anticipated WITH sequestration in place.
