Voluntary Suspension from the Register (aka Cold Feet)

I am thrilled to have qualified for the Register. Unfortunately, since starting this process over a year ago, I have realized that I am not yet "available" to make a shift into public service.
After receiving my NOR I started researching how to temporarily suspend myself from consideration. I was concerned that if I did not, OPM and Agency time/money would be wasted on me and that I would eliminate an interview slot for another viable candidate.
I sent a simple email to aljapplication@opm.gov asking that my name be temporarily suspended from the register due to “unavailability.”
Within 36 hours I received the following confirmation:
No questions were asked about the basis for my “unavailability."
If anyone else has successfully suspended then restored their Register status, I would welcome your insight into whether this process really works!
I thought others might benefit from knowing how to go an “inactive” status so as to avoid being “thrice-struck” for unavailability and losing a judicial opportunity forever.

Based on your request, your name has been suspended from the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) register. Therefore, you will no longer be referred for consideration for ALJ positions until you ask that your name be restored to the register as described below.
If you wish to have your name restored to the register, you must submit your request in writing to the ALJ email box at aljapplication@opm.gov. Requests to end the suspension due to unavailability and have your name restored to the register will be accepted as long as the register on which you were placed has not been terminated, and you continue to satisfy the licensure requirement.
