I think something to consider is that the offers come out so much more slowly than in the past so it is easier to put data together even if you are trying to remain anonymous. In other words, the data/poll answers hit slowly, not all at once like in the past. That makes it harder to reveal only some things and not others.

That is probably one of the best reasons to create a range for an answer, not one specific score # or city. I agree we should adjust the polls slightly. Maybe instead of by each region, perhaps group 2 or 3 cities together from a region, and scores would be grouped in 3's (80.50 - 83.50). I only add this so that those who want more clarity in the data can get some satisfaction while still allowing more anonymity for those who feel uncomfortable with all this info on the board. Now if we could just Gaidin to put the polls together...

Here is the thing. You can vote in the polls and never say anything about getting hired or wait until more votes are in before announcing it. Or you can tell everybody. I don't think people should feel compelled to do more or less. I understand Mamaru's concern for instance but voting in the polls doesn't "out" anyone. Honestly, I think its just a tad much to tell people they can't reveal information about where they got hired or whatever.

Now if we could just Gaidin to put the polls together... I will gladly do the polls. I would probably do each city separate. If a person votes in the poll there is nothing tying that vote to any one member of the Board. I honestly am not sure I see the utility in a score poll. However, if I were putting one together I would do it in ranges of 3 or 4 numbers.

Scores really don't seem to matter much, except for the first cert because it is intellectual curiosity, more than a measuring stick. Insider/outsider, vet/nonvet, top 3 choice city or bottom of the barrel, etc. That is good info for future ALJ candidates and future certs being pulled off this register. Remember, there may be a refresh of this register in 2 years, and we could all use a brush up on which cities were popular so we can expand our GAL accordingly (fingers crossed we can).

Agreed to everything you said. Except! I don't know about you Sealaw but I hope to be a lovable curmudgeon like Bart giving guidance to applicants in two years. If that doesn't work out I hope they let me expand my GAL so I can the office next to you. I doubt you are still sitting on this side of the bench in 2 years.

Gaiden, thanks in advance for your upcoming polls! I know they'll be excellent, as always.
I would put in a plug here for the score poll. As one just outside the range of scores that were reached this time it was very helpful to me to see that I have a fair shot at getting in a 2nd cert. I'd suggest, since there are so many of us clustered in that curve, that the breakdown in the score poll not be linear, but rather accommodate the fractional point spreads--something like 70.00 to 70.20, etc., for the scores at the top of the bell. Thanks.

The only thing about scores on the first cert was because of the range between the top score and the lower scores on the cert. So when scores were reported, I knew that SSA had to go through a bunch of the higher scores before I would even be considered, if at all. Now on the second cert I think that the scores will be bunched much more closely, particular with the high number of scores in the 70s range. So I am not sure if that data will be useful. Just adding this info to the conversation, FWIW.

I may be in the minority, but I found the scores poll to be one of the most informative polls we had going. In fact, rather than thinking it would be improved by broader groupings of scores, there were times I wished it was possible to see how low within a whole number (e.g., the 74s) hiring had reached. So I think that poll is useful with each whole number as the grouping, the way it was done. Just my two cents on this topic.

I agree, Gary. I found it and the city poll the only ones I really checked. The preference and vet/outsider poll has no interest to me, and I did not see how it would tell me anything relating to when or if an offer would be coming my way or if I was still in the game. But what do I know?

I can see where you are going with the score breakdown, but honestly, it was your ticket to the dance and doesn't equate to anything really.
Although from the perpective of giving someone with a score of 60 a better idea of when they might be on a cert - I see the value in that.
Really, I am not bipolar. I just don't have a dog in this fight. Now the fight with chessparent to get on the next cert...I got cats and dogs and anything else I need!!

I could be wrong, but I don't think the cats and dogs will deflect chessparent's cannibalistic tendencies.

Not at all. I'm coming with an arsenal of very irritated racccoons and a dachshund with a flair for the dramatic.

I have my light saber, a few west nile virus infected mosquitoes from my neighborhood (recently discovered, thank you), a rabid red fox, and rabbits who are hungry 'cause there's no more blueberries left in my garden. We can let them battle it out while we sip Bag Lady's DOTD on the porch.
I feel a Monty Python skit coming on . . .

Make fewer and simpler polls in the future. Poll fatigue is very real here.

Back to the original thread - I think there's a difference between accumulating the info that others have posted about themselves into a chart (many have volunatarily given out all the details) AND interpolating or guesstimating data from posts in which the poster did NOT post details, and maybe that reticence was on purpose.
As to this last bit, SeaLaw, you seem to live in a very - ah - interesting part of the country. It definitely sounds Python-worthy!

Make fewer and simpler polls in the future. Poll fatigue is very real here. This whole thing is fatiguing. Even Robert Bork's grilling was over in a few days.
