Hot off the press - or perhaps old news - new ALJ class consist of between 20 - 30 new ALJs with start date on Jan. 25. Thanks! It's welcome confirmation of some earlier rumors/theories. I would assume there will be a second class following January interviews of another 40-60 judges.

This is what had been stated previously on this Board and what my sources had been hinting at. I thought the January class would be smaller and the second set of classes from this cert might be larger. It's nice to have another confirmation of the same information.

From Chief ALJ Debra Bice, in an e-mail sent minutes ago:
"Here are some updates that may be of interest to you.
We are in the midst of hiring a class of 20-30 new ALJs with an EOD of Jan. 25. We will continue ALJ hiring throughout the fiscal year with the hope of bringing on a total of 200-250 ALJs in FY15, budget permitting.
One of the issues presented by this hiring effort is hearing room capacity. We are exploring various options, including the possibility of Judge Only Video (JOV) rooms. A JOV could be a DVU in an unused decision writer office retrofitted appropriately – any judge in the office could use this JOV for a video hearing – freeing up hearing room capacity for an increased ALJ corp."

I have no further information on the hire. Sorry!

Thank you for sharing ssaer. Interesting dilemma for SSA isn't it? I am not so sure the JOV room will actually allow for many more hearings to be held in person.

20 is a real small class and before this new way of doing things, the consensus was that they would never have a class so small. How times have changed. Anyway, I wonder if they make calls for the 20-30 new hires and then stop calling. OR- if March is another new class, I am thinkng they may start extending offers and give people the option of starting in January or starting in March. If they are meeting to decide who to hire and all have been interviewed, I don't see any reason for them to start making calls and then stop. That may only be wishful thinking, but this waiting and not knowing is most unenjoyable.

That's odd. She didn't tell me any of this when we spoke yesterday.

Just trying to pass the time until offers commence:) Orchid, they seemed to try to align the start date for the new ALJs going into the same office on the 1st cert but I couldn't get any rhyme or reason to how they picked those offices. It probably has more to do with how they set their draft board to get down to where they want to be. If they need to hire Valpo 1st to get to who they want in Orland Park at the end that means that Valpo will be in the first class and Orland Park in the second. This by the way was great news to get my day started.

That may only be wishful thinking, but this waiting and not knowing is most unenjoyable. The 1st cert they appeared to hire by office. They extended offers to all the candidates in one office at a time. Then moved to the next office. They also appeared to be sending the new hires through training together. There was at least one report of a person that asked to be in the 2nd class to allow more time to close up their practice. They were allowed to do that. I don't think they were given an "option" I believe they had to specifically request that and may have been required to give a reason. 20 - 30 means they are shooting for 30 but will run the course with just 20 if they must. Remember there are reports that at least 2 of those spots were filled from the 1st cert. I think if they fill the class before the holidays or even during the holidays they may stop until after New Years so that everybody in the hiring office can enjoy some time off. It does appear that Bob has used his use or lose time though. Just a reminder for Bob when he gets back into the office. I need 48 hours and I will be there. Wherever there is.

So, they can't finish hiring all they plan to hire from this cert prior to the holidays or soon thereafter.

I hear there is a bounty of 1,000,000 Board points to the first ALJ to conduct a hearing entirely in Klingon.
