I can now confirm the offer and my acceptance of the (first?) Fresno position for March 23. I have completed all polls. I'm honored and excited and ready to get to work. Congratulations to my fellow March hares. *hires. March Hares is better. I've heard becoming an ALJ is like falling down the rabbit hole. Or maybe it's like getting sucked through the looking glass. I, too, thought the typo was appropriate! Congratulations, all!

Sratty, I am not "liking" the fact that you may be out for this round, I'm just commiserating. There have been a number of new hires since I last popped on to say "congratulations", so I just wanted to say congrats to sandiferhands, stilltrying, bettyrubble, and anyone else I may have missed.

Thanks Hondo, many of us in the same commiserating boat. Well, I just need to take my own advice and stop worrying about it. We have NO clue how many will be in each city, and this class is not full yet. We all still have at least 150 more chances with 3 more classes after this one... so it's all good. Let all those folks get in now and we can get in when the snow melts.

There will almost certainly be even more opportunities in FY2016 for folks currently sitting on the register.

Hopefully, OMHA gets their budget approved and moves forward with hiring an additional 120 ALJs for FY '16 that someone posted about last week.

Congrats to the 2nd West Des Moines! Welcome aboard! I think I may be out for this round. Now I can focus on May and a nice June training experience. (I hope ) Good luck all! Just curious how you reached this determination, e.g., seeing lower scores selected and then noting cities on your GAL being filled? Or watching the number of hires and estimating that the class is full? And you certainly do not have to answer in public, or even at all. But I'd love to know what factors you consider. Maybe it's time for me to stop checking my voicemail for missed calls.

Or watching the number of hires and estimating that the class is full? And you certainly do not have to answer in public, or even at all. But I'd love to know what factors you consider. Maybe it's time for me to stop checking my voicemail for missed calls. I had a fairly open GAL but only had 5 cities on my cert list due to my score. Out of the 5 cities I had, offers have been made in all 5 cities. I work at ODAR and know some of the people who work in various cities all over, and I have been informed of the number they planned to hire in the cities on my cert list. Unless they hire more than what they planned and/or my contacts are wrong, I am out this round.
Now with that said, just because you see hiring in a city does not mean they will not hire additional people there, remember there were multiples in Middlesboro, Cincinnati, etc. But I am using the information passed along by people who actually work in the offices that I had on my cert list. If you have many cities on your list, you may still be fine. For me it is a combination problem with my score and the cities I have on my list.
Once new cities are in play, with new certificates being issued, I (as well as others in my same situation of which there are MANY), the game will begin again. You have to line up exactly right to get an offer... you have to have a high 3 score for THAT city. I have likely not even been considered yet as I may not have been in the high 3 yet for any city. You can guess what scores pair with what cities so you know about where your chances lie. If you know your score is higher than someone chosen, then there may be a strike issue for that city. As we all know, strikes are discretionary with the agency so it may NOT mean you have a strike. It may simply be you were considered against someone with a higher recommendation. This is the part where guess work comes into play.

Thank you, Sratty, for laying out again the permutations of this process. The whole dang thing is so convoluted, that sometimes little wrinkles are forgotten or not considered. I find it helpful to have a good restatement like this one!

What are often referred to as "strikes" are technically considerations (sometimes called bona fide considerations). When you are in a top 3 from which they hire someone else, you receive a consideration. After you have received three considerations without being hired, the agency does not have to consider you for any future slots, even if your NOR would put you in the top 3 for that slot.
Where the agency has discretion is not in whether you receive a consideration (i.e., a strike), but rather in whether they consider you for a slot after you have received 3 considerations.

And a temporary pox on Gaidin! Those mutton chops cannot be unseen!!! I have always had a visceral dislike of that song (probably the arguably misogynistic lyrics) and never knew who sang it, but that is exactly how I would have pictured them if I had spent the energy to do so.
Turns out the name Mungo Jerry is inspired by T.S. Elliot (so at least there's that), and the singer seems to be a rather decent person. British, which I would not have guessed.
Ok, pox lifted!

Sratty, thank you for the great explanation. I love the 'stars aligning' idea. Having experienced the last 6 months of certs, it makes perfect sense.
